The Flying Hospital

Sat Aug 03, 2002 10:54 am

Hey there does anyone know when this a/c operates and if it actually has a cabin crew for the doctors and other medical staff?

And excuse me for my ignorance but what country are "P" reg. a/c from?

Thanks in advance.

Except that it is P4-MED, hence an Aruban registration. It sits at TUS. I don't believe it's flown in over a year.

One of the L-1011 that is owned by TFH is DL ship 728! The last L-1011 in DL fleet.

My home is in Tucson, AZ and see the gorgeous L-1011 P4-MED whenever flying out of Tucson. Don't know what the complete story is on this plane - rarely seems to be in use. Some photos:

A website on P4-MED: http://www.l1011.homestead.com/flyinghosp.html

Plenty of seating for travelling docs.

Appears our TUS-parked P4-MED has competition in the way of "ORBIS", a Flying Eye Hospital DC-10:

Anybody have some interesting information on these two birds? How are the missions funded? I know that ORBIS is maintained gratis by United Airlines and FedEx.

The Flying Hospital used to belong to Pat Robertson's Operation Blessing. The website that Cointyro provided a link to seems to think that Ship 728 was going to be converted into another flying hospital to replace the original one - nothing could be further from the truth. It has simply been parted out to keep P4-MED flying for some time to come.

The speciality of the Flying Hospital has been reconstructive surgery, especially operations on cleft palates; whilst the Orbis DC10 - as the name suggests - specialises in eye operations.

Orbis used a DC-8 before they got the DC-10.
