Southwest's New Paint & 737-200s

Sun Aug 04, 2002 2:04 pm

first of all I did a search and found nothing, I am sure it is out there but I couldn't make it happen, so here is my question.

I think WN is only adding the new livery during 'D' checks or major overhauls right? So do they plan to paint all the 200 series they have? I was watching the runway at Love Field from the Parking garage a few weekends ago and saw a new livery 737-200. For some reason that surprised me, after reading many threads on here about the new birds getting the paint first. Any idea if all the 200s will be worked in??? Just curious, thanks.

I can't find the thread unfortunately (I can't imagine that it would have been deleted, but who knows these days), but a couple of days ago, the topic of the blue 737-200 came up, and it was actually painted in the new scheme by mistake. Hard to believe, but apparently true. The company who painted it, understandably, had to foot the $400,000 odd bill.

I am sure a WN insider will be able to provide even more information for you, but I hope this helps,

Yeah it does exist. I flew on it IND-STL back last october I think. Looked really nice on the outside. The interior however...

I'll help you out here...

There IS only one -200 currently in the new paint scheme...N96SW (Fred J. Jones).

The planes are painted on an as needed basis, so the newest ones are not necessarily the ones which will be painted first.

We are scheduled to have 27 -200's left by year's end. I don't know if any more of them will get the new paint job, though. They would have be slated to remain in our fleet for a while in order to make it worth the $$$.

IIRC, wasn't the new 732 in the original ad for the new livery, along with a 73G?

Somewehre there was another topic talking about the paint job being an "accidnet" i find it hard to beleive though.. when i was wroking in SDF i got in a friendly argument with them over the color of the planes... the southwest agent said they were blue i said they were purple.... as in barney the dinosaur

the southwest agent said they were blue i said they were purple

It kinda depends on the prevailing light...

What I'll be interested in seeing is how the color "ages". Some of those old Federal Express birds looked pretty shabby as their paint began to fade.

Hi all,

Yesterday, 7/31, N423WN, the latest Southwest 737-700 delivered.
There are now only 4 of the new ones left here. We were told in the
morning staff meeting that starting next week, SWA is going to be
bringing in the first of what could be up to 25 retiring -200s. They
made a point that these were coming in for storage, not part-out as
62SW was, so maybe these will be sold off like the Metrojets were.

OT: How many -200's does WN have in service now?

Obviously if they are going to retire them it doesn't make sense to paint them...does anyone have a retirement schedule?

I got this off of our newsletter:

"Southwest has taken delivery of our 367th Boeing 737 aircraft. The latest addition to our fleet--N423WN--was added July 31, becoming our 15th delivery of the year. No aircraft will be added to the fleet in August, while one delivery is scheduled for September and two are planned for October. Southwest's projected fleet size for yearend is 370: 27 737-200s, 194 -300s, 25 -500s and 124 -700s."

I can't speak with complete certainty concerning when the last -200 will be retired or exactly how the retirement schedule will go, but I know that we will continue to fly them for at least a couple more years (I think 2005 is the target date). We are in the process of retiring a couple of them right now (N67SW being one), but from what I hear, it's hard to find buyers for them. Lease returns are much simpler.

so I will ask a sidenote question as well. are the 200s based out of mainly Texas and Southwestern Airports. The 200 role into OKC often. I see them when we run T&Gs at will rogers.

Regarding the 737 in the picture... what kind of engines are those?

According to Bill Harm's web site, Southwest now has 26 737-200's (if I counted correctly). So if they are to have 27 by year end, they won't be retiring any.

Lt-AWACS - I have heard that the 200's are Texas based, although I do see 200's at MCI quite often. Last year, I flew them quite often between MCI and OKC (the flight continued on to HOU) - so I suppose they are keeping them "close to home", but that doesn't mean you won't see them in the non WA states.
