FRA, CDG Or Lhr? Most International Destinations?

Mon Aug 05, 2002 8:24 pm

Frankfurt, Paris and London are the three biggest european airports also served by the most airlines resulting in the most destinations as well.
Which of the three has the most airlines and which the most destinations?

Did CDG beat FRA passengerwise already?

When the US-UK have 'Open Skies'(if?) then LHR will have a few more destinations.

On ADP website, I have found the following figures for CDG+ ORY . (there is no split between the 2 Paris airports)
415 airlines from 94 countries, serving 529 airports in 134 countries (number of cities does include domestic airports, I guess)

LHR's claim to be the largest international airport is somewhat false. As LHR is the largest in number of passengers, but is the smallest behind FRA & CDG in THREE other measures: (1) No. of airlines, (2) Freight & (3) Destinations served.

In the first two months of 2002 LHR was 4 million passengers ahead of Paris. However in freight traffic LHR is behind FRA,CDG & even AMS.

A while back I counted the total (incl domestic) destinations for several airports and FRA (and AMS, I think) was far ahead of LHR/LGW/ORY/CDG. Not surprising, since London and Paris are dividing destinations between two airports.

Thank you for the information so far.

Does anybody know anything about the three airlines having their bases at those airports: Air France, British Airways and Lufthansa?
Who serves the most destinations?

I guess that BA just as LHR won't be in the lead since they fly to major destinations (JFK) up to 10 times a day (is that correct?).

BA flies to JFK 8 times a day. 2 daily Concorde flights, plus 6 daily regular sub-sonic flights, i think BA is adding a 7th daily JFK flight although i'm not 100 sure on that.

Don't really know who has the most destinations from their hubs as i don't have the figures, but i suppose it will roughly be the same amount, if not a bit less or more.

It is said LHR is biggest in terms of pax flying internationally...
It sees more pax flying, and a lot of them are flying further than those in Paris and Frankfurt.
It alos handles more passangers in total than any of the European rivals anyway, by a long shot.
In terms of movements, LHR is a bit behind paris, just goes to show you how much bigger and more important it is, if it handles 4 million more passangers with fewer movements that CDG... because airlines use much bigger aircraft to serve the routes with.

LHR has very few regional planes- a few KLM F50 flights+ a couple of ATR ones.LH CRJs and thats about it apart from the odd BMI F100+ERJ subbed in for 737s.

That's true, regional aircraft at LHR are a rarity, very few compared to other european and american airports.
