Countries With Largest Airport Outside Capital?

Tue Aug 06, 2002 8:11 pm

Hi there.

What countries have their largest airport outside their capital? I can think of Sydney, Australia and Atlanta, USA. What others are there?
I used to think the brain is the most fascinating part of my body. But, hey, who is telling me that?

France : capital Paris, Major airport Roissy-en-France  Laugh out loud

In no particular order:

Nigeria:
capital - Abuja
largest airport - Lagos (I assume)

Saudi-Arabia
c - Rhyad
l.a. - Jeddah or Dahran (at least juding from the number of airlines)

Cyprus
c - Nicosia
l.a. - Larnaca

Turkey
c - Ankara
l.a. - Istanbul (the older one, I think "Ataturk")

Not to be nitpicky, but Sydney is a state-capital, if that counts for anything,

I was basing my comment re The Hague on the understanding that it is the seat of the Dutch Government. That is the normal criteria for defining a country's capital city. I do realise that Amsterdam is the Condtitutional Capital of The Netherlands. Nothings's ever simple, is it?

Dutchwings, that is correct but Schiphol is NOT in Amsterdam. It's in Haarlemmermeer in the village (or rather on top of it  Smile/happy/getting dizzy ) of Schiphol.
It's only called Amsterdam Airport for marketting reasons (and because Amsterdam is the closest city).
A more geographically correct name would be Hoofddorp international airport Schiphol but I doubt many foreigners (or even Dutch people) would place it correctly that way).

The Luis Munoz Marin International Airport in Puerto Rico (which people and airlines consider San Juan ) is located in Isla Verde which is in the city of Carolina . The San Juan airport is Isla Grande Municipal Airport which is much smaller than LMM, so Puerto Rico's biggest airport is outside the Capital city .

Yes and Cyprus is recognised as Turkish by the people of Turkey. That doesn't make it Turkish. What is your point? We are discussing recognised capitals, not fairytale ones!

Taipei and Tokyo are the capitals of Taiwan and Japan, but the "Taipei" and "Tokyo" airports are actually in Taoyuan and Narita -- quite a bit of a distance from the capital cities themselves. Same for Seoul and Incheon, I think.

SVG, Israel is the only country in the world that recognizes its capital as Jerusalem. The USA and all other countries recognize Israel's capital as Tel Aviv (if they even recognize Israel at all).

Back on topic...

You guys forgot Canada. Ottowa is Canada's capital, however I believe that Montreal or Toronto is the laregst airport.

Guys, it's Ottawa, Canada not Ottowa.  Big grin

I would have to say that the majority of the world's capitals are not home to the country's busiest airport. Although I suspect that most capital airports are in the top 10. Ottawa for example is #6 in Canada.

I remember an ICAO official tearing his hair out because someone had listed Jerusalem as the Israeli capital in one of the official ICAO handbooks.

As has been pointed out, the rest of the world is going to see Tel Aviv as the capital. At least until someone bangs the Israelis' and Palestinians' heads together and tells both sides to grow up.

Should we consider Texas a country (for those non-history types... it was before entering the US as a state... President Sam Houston)?

Austin - capitol... larger airports in Dallas (DFW) and Houston (IAH).

Some of these have been covered:

Canada
capital: Ottawa
largest airport: Toronto

Germany
capital: Berlin
largest airport: Frankfurt

Jamaica
capital: Kingston
largest airport: Montego Bay

St. Lucia
capital: Castries
largest airport: Vieux Fort (Hewanorra is located near Vieux Fort). The airport near Castries--Vigie--can only handle
small aircraft.

Guadeloupe (technically part of France)
capital: Basse Terre
largest airport: Pointe a Pitre

Israel
capital: Tel Aviv or Jerusalem (depends on who you ask)
Largest airport: Lod (Ben Gurion is actually in the town of Lod which is 10 miles from Tel Aviv. I suppose I am nit-picking  Smile/happy/getting dizzy)

About Guadeloupe, that is strictly correct as the capital Basse-Terre actually has a small airport too. Pointe-a-Pitre is the commercial centre and thus has the largest airport in the territory. The Department has 8 or 9 airports in total - 3 on Guadeloupe itself plus Marie Galante, Le Desirade, Les Saintes (I am not sure whether there are 1 or 2 there), St. Barts and French St. Martin (separate from Princess Juliana on the Dutch side).

St. Lucia is probably a bit iffy in this regard as UVF also serves Castries despite being 40 miles away - the play-off of having a small, convenient regional airport and a larger one for the heavies a bit further away has been mastered by this Windward Island.

On a final note, Jerusalem is the capital of Israel as far as I know, not Tel Aviv, although the latter is the largest city in the country.

It's good ol' Amstelveen. Also the cradle of KLM.

People who are mentioning that Narita, Incheon, and Schiphol are not in the capital cities are missing the point. They serve the capital cities of their respective countries.
BWI and IAD are not actually in DC, but I would definately count them as DC airports.
Most countries have their largest cities as their capital, and therefore it is going to be their largest airports. I think we've already mentioned virtually ever example of countries with the biggest airports serving cities not the capital.
What country's busiest airports do not serve its largest city?
Obviously ATL is the prime example, and I would assume Montreal is a bigger city than Toronto.
Is Barcelona a bigger city than Madrid?
BTW, Japan's busiest airport is Haneda, and not Narita.

Sorry Spark, Toronto is sizeably larger than Montreal in population. Vancouver too has gone ahead in recent years. The reasons are complex but the political problems in Quebec with the separatist movement has been a major factor.

No, Montreal is still larger than Vancouver in terms of population. In fact, the gap is still sizable as pointed out by Pendrilsaint. Trintocan, where did you get the information saying Vancouver had overtaken Montreal. Unless you mean interms of passengers served by their airports.
