KE Seoul-NYC, Why 1 Nonstop & 1 Stopping In Anc?

Korean Air has two daily flights from Seoul to NYC.
One is a non-stop and the other one makes a stop in ANC.

(same thing on the westbound NYC-Seoul flight, one non-stop and
one stopping in ANC)

Do they pick-up or drop-off a lot of passengers/cargo in Anchorage or something?

I'm not sure if my info is up-to-date, but it used to be that KAL stops over in ANC on the way to SEL during their night flight, otherwise they'd arrive way too early in SEL

Well...I'm flying KE from JFK to ICN next week. There are two flights a day, one of them is non-stop both ways, the other is only non-stop from Seoul. I don't know why one of them stops in Anchorage. My guess is that there is a large Korean community in Anchorage and the JFK flight is the only one that flies closest to that airport.

Incidently, prior to 9/11, KE used to fly to EWR from ICN, with a stop in Anchorage both ways.

Actually, KE has been flying both flights through ANC recently thanks to an incident at JFK last week where KE 085 had to divert to SWF in the thunderstorm thanks to fuel exhaustion.

Could be cargo related as well. ANC is a large cargo stop for KE.

I would say CARGO.
ANC is a huge cargo base and Korea produces a lot of items us North Americans buy.

OK, so it's not as large a community as say L.A.'s or NYC's, but for a city of its size, it's pretty big.

Cargo could be a reason as well, but KE and OZ fly all cargo 747's into JFK.

If it was just a fuel stop, then they wouldn't have a non-stop to begin with, would they? Maybe someone from KE can answer the question.

The one-stop ICN-JFK 747-400 flight stops in Anchrage on BOTH westbound and eastbound..... while the nonstop ICN-JFK, also 747-400, doesn't stop either way....

I guess cargo is the most likely explanation? Or perhaps one of that particular 747-400 cannot make the flight nonstop for technical reasons? (no crew rest, for example, which makes it necessary to change the crew at ANC?)

Actually, the second daily SEL-JFK flight KE 85, is nonstop 3 times per week. This is summer only, eastbound.
727, L1011, MD80, A300, 777-200, 737-300, 737-700, 747-400, 757-200, 737-800, A320. E190, E135, 767-200, CRJ9

Ok, let's see...

Passenger Service
KE081/082 non-stop, ICN/JFK/ICN, 74S...7days a week
KE085/086 1-stop, ICN/ANC/JFK/ANC/ICN, 744...6days a week (all but Thursday)

then

Freighter Service
KE251/252, 1-stop, ICN/ANC/JFK/ANC/ICN, 7QF
KE257/258, 1-stop, ICN/ANC/JFK/ANC/ICN, 7QF (M1F on days 1,3,5)
(most current sked...)

I know that the freighters have to stop there for fuel. We're able to get higher loads by stopping in ANC than going direct, especially with the 747-200F and MD-11F, but I think it is the departure and arrival times are the reason for the pax service (probably some issue with earlier arrivals for business and connecting flights. KE082 leave around 1300 where KE086 leaves around 2300 so I think there is somehting there. But it is not due to curfew in Korea. With ICN we finally have a 24hour airport, whereas Kimpo(GMP) had a 2300L curfew that lasted until 0600L next morning.

I do know that usually the only thing we do in ANC is load fuel. It is rare that pax or cargo get off (esp for pax on the JFK-ANC run...). Sometimes they will have to off-load pallets in ANC for ACL reasons on the freighters onward to ICN. But ususally it is nothing more than a tech stop. BTW, most of our freighters route through ANC for fuel, except when the West Coast has the 744F which can go direct at payload.

Kimpo is exclesively used for domestic flights now.

Korean Air also flies ICN-ANC-YYZ...
When i was on it, the passenger next to me only flew YYZ-ANC, and didnt continue to ICN...
