CX To Decide On 388 In "6-8 Months"

Wed Aug 07, 2002 9:00 pm

According to Cathay's CEO Turnbull, the airline is set to decide on the latter part of this year or early 2003 on whether to buy the 380.

Does anyone have estimated on how many they would buy if they chose to do so? IIRC when the launch customers were being gathered CX was listed as being interested in around 5 or so frames, and recently they were rumoured to be considering leasing 6 from ILFC.

I hope they will order the B 747-400ER/QLR along with the A 388.

747-400ERs are very unlikely; I would imagine, however, that more A340-600s would be ordered (or leased) around the same time as the 388 deal is announced; these could replace earlier 744s or even supplement the long haul fleet.

I think CX will end up ordering the A388, many of its routes can easily support an aircraft of that size, specifically HKG-SFO, NRT, & LHR. CX has been expanding steadily over the years, with the 3 A346s joining the fleet soon & the evenly split 3 Boeing 773 3 Airbus A333 aircraft order they announced a few months ago.

I heard that they might even get a few second hand B 744s.

I think CX will do a long-term lease of A380-800's through ILFC.

Remember, ILFC has a LOI for five A388's and CX could grab them all from ILFC. The CX A388's will likely be used on routes from HKG to LHR, NRT, LAX, SFO, YVR and YYZ. In can envisage CX flying the 747-400 to SFO on certain days of the week and the A388 on other days of the week.

While I would like to see new 747's in the CX fleet I think that it is highly doubtful at this stage! I did hear they were looking at a few second hand 747-400's so you never know, for CX to buy used planes though they would have to be pretty new though.

There are certainly routes within the CX route network that could handle the A388! Like the ones RayChuang mentioned and also probably Sydney.

My CX flights from FRA were always packed. I guess FRA-CLK could fill a A380 in future as well.
