United Hub Daily Departures

Thu Aug 08, 2002 4:10 am

How many daily departures does United have at each of its primary hubs: SFO, DEN, ORD, IAD. If anybody has the numbers for LAX, New York, MIA, you can include those too. Also what is UA's largest international gateway for both transatlantic and pacific flights. Thanks a lot.

funny, I asked a United captain which was their largest trans atlantic and pacific gateway last week on DEN-STL. He said that he was almost for sure that it was SFO for tp and IAD for ta. On that flight even tho i am biast UA's service was much better than what I usually get on AA.

For all international flights it is SFO, for transpac it is SFO, for transatlantic it is IAD.

Could this be true? United has only 122 flights a day out of LAX. That is only 17 more departures than American.

Does this 122 include United Express flights, because adding American Eagle flights to the AA total brings AA's total departures to a 179. (The source for these numbers is AMR's own factsheet on LAX. They provided this fact sheet with the press release on the expanded Terminal 4.)

What happened to UA's hub at LAX?

On the other hand, AA seems to be growing at LAX on the back of its codeshare partners. If Qantas manages to push UA out of the LAX-SYD market with their monopoly power back home and AA and Cathay get the right to codeshare, AA can only get bigger domestically out of LAX. International growth will probably be limited to the one LAX-JFK flight, coming on line next year. But who needs international growth when all of that codeshare traffic comes at a lower opportunity cost for AA. More importantly, AA seems to be putting the hurt to United by proxy. It costs AA nothing when Cathay and Qantas go head to head with United and win in their home markets.

United I believe had around 180 departures from LAX prior to 9/11. Now they're at about 130. That's mainline only. United Express greatly adds to that total.

American had about 130 prior to 9/11 and now have around 105.

My figures for United at LAX show 286 daily departures, including United Express, not including fellow Star Alliance flights. However, my info is a little bit dated.
