Indianopolis to YYC using 737-800 with winglets.

Indianopolis to Calgary and then to Grand Rapids using L1011s.
Rare (once a week flights) usually on any given day of the week.

CLT opened July 18. San Jose is up on Oct. 1 and Montego Bay and Puerto Vallarta open in December. Chicago Express is opening CID and LEX this month. I spent a few hours at MDW this week and every flight I saw went out full or very close to full. The most number of available seats I saw was 20 on a mid-day 757 flt to LGA. I was really impressed at the high level of customer service everywhere. We are really making an awesome effort on that front.

Load factors for July were 84.2% on mainline and 72.4% on Chicago Express.

George Mikelsons is taking back control of his airline. John Tague was offered control of the charter division, but declined.

As a former resident of Indianapolis, I've flown ATA numerous times. But recently, I've had to fly a lot between Indianapolis and Midway, always on the 738 flight in the evening (cont. from Seattle, then IND-LAX--more like a ferry), and then the 738 flight in the morning (same routing). At the same time, I've been doing a lot of travel on NW and UA, and believe me, it is always refreshing to receive the customer service of TZ. The F/As are wonderful, the new 738 is gorgeous and clean, and the pilots always make me feel like I am in good hands. I had the opportunity to speak to an L1011 pilot on one of the flights, who was telling me of TZ's preference of hiring ex-military pilots. That made me feel really good.

At any rate, ATA gets big thumbs-up from me--they've improved dramatically, growing for a primarily charter carrier to what they are now. And the new gates at Midway are fabulous.

Thanks!

I am hoping to get to fly on them sometime PHL-MDW...the 737-800s look gorgeous zipping around PHLon their way in and out. Hopefully one day we will see them fly to Atlanta and i'll have a reason to get on them! PHL-MDW-ATL is doable if its on ATA!

I've gotta hand it to ATA/MDW. I once swore I wouldn't fly them because of MDW airport. Now, it is completely different. I don't mind flying them at all. Love those 737-800s, although I liked the 727s just as well. Now that MDW is almost finished updating the terminal/concourses, it is already a great and exciting place to connect and/or use.

Pll-lot--Why does a high percentage of ex-military pilots make an operation safe? DAL hired almost exclusively from the military up until the '90's. They had a succession of accidents and incidents in the '80's and their hiring practices were heavily criticized by the FAA(in fact, they had to revamp their entire process).

What about shooting Sidewinders and dropping LGB's(nothing to do with JetBlue) qualifies you to work in the airline business?

I have flown with some ex-military pilots who were unbelievably good pilots and great people. I have also flown with some who couldn't find their butts with both hands. I can say the same about civilian pilots, too. You cannot pigeon-hole any one type of individual from any one type of background as being better pilot material.

BTW--military pilots think they are the best because they are told they are the best because they have to believe they are the best--if you are tooling around at 100' at 500kts. in an F-16 with 200 hours total time, you'd better f**ing believe it, too! Smile TC

I was sitting outside several minutes ago eating lunch. Where i work is under the flight path for arrivals in Philadelphia, however, we are still about 40 miles NW of the airport. I was watching the planes go over, and what do i see but a 737-800 with winglets, undoubtedly ATA. it was gorgeous! The way the sun reflected off the airplane AND the winglets was awesome to look at. Just thought I'd share =)

There are several ATA employees on this board. I recall seeing a couple days a go a report that stated they lost 28 million for the 2nd quarter(i believe it was just for the 2nd quarter). I know its not good when an airline loses money, but for an airline the size of ATA, is that an outrageous amount to be losing or one that shouldn't cause too much worry? Were they losing more money in the 1st quarter than they did 2nd?

discounting and funneling money to C8 has a toll on your bottom line. ATA holdings just spent a good portion of cash to update the ground equipment at the Chicago Express stations and update their own mainline stations.

ATA is also seeing less money in it's coffers because they used to fly aircraft they owned. Unfortunately, a good 85% of ATA's fleet is leased, which means an increase in monthly cash flow (negative) and it will be harder for the airline to make money... which is why Sun Country REALLY died... if SY kept the 727s and DC-10s, they'd still be around today in original form.

I've noticed a few changes at ATA as well... all for the better. It's a great product if you just want to get there and don't care much for inflight ammenities or luxuries you get with the majors...

Actually ATA offers more inflight amenities then some low fare carriers with a few exceptions. ATA has recently upgraded its snacks, added hot snacks on certain flights and has inflight entertainment. Headsets only cost $1.00 and the passenger can keep it and use it again. The new aircraft also offer all leather seating with adjustable headrests, So I would not consider it "just getting there". The gap bewteen what ATA offers and what a major offers these days is much smaller then it used to be and at a MUCH better price.

I wish C8 would funnel some more money down here into DAY for new ground equipment. We finally received a new tug recently(after months of pulling teeth). We use old stairs taken from the airport to unload the Saabs as well. Here in DAY we fly out more pax than every station besides MDW and IND. In fact in June we flew out 5,331 pax.(that is with 7 dailies to MDW, except Saturday where we're down to 5) All I'm saying here is some C8 stations haven't received any new ground equipment, although I hear all newly opened stations do have all new equipment.

I was looking at the ATA website and when i looked at the seatmaps i noticed that neither the 727 nor the L-1011 was on there. I knew they were getting rid of the 727 but is the L-1011 also done?

thanks

The 727s are completely gone; the L-1011s fly just a couple scheduled routes (out of IND) but they mostly work charters.

Here's one ATA employee speaking up...  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

I'm a CSA for ATA at Minneapolis-Saint Paul. New uniforms 10/1, plus all the new cities Joe (Jjbiv) spoke of are coming online soon.

ATA did post a $28.2M loss for Q2, but posted a profit for Q1. ATA ended Q2 with $150M+ in unrestricted cash.

Tague has left, leaving Mikelsons in control and set to reorganise. One of the items he has stressed is using the L10s more often.

A $168M loan is still pending, though ATA mgmt has taken the stance that we should not EXPECT the loan, but if we get it, we're that much more stable. Under no circumstances will it be used for further capital investment, but rather a cash backup for the times ahead.

I love working for ATA, as the fare are affordable, we take great care of our passengers/customers, serve great destinations on clean new Boeing 738/752/753s with inflight movies/sitcoms on longer flights. There's no first class, and we pack 'em in, but I believe we offer a tremendous value to our customer.

Having just opened up CLT, I can't help but think that is killing US Airways... though they just declared bankruptcy this morning. I can't wait for the NYSE to open up!

Hey Joe: any truth to the rumour that C8 might open up a MDW-YYZ flight???

Thanks for the interest in ATA! I truly hope they continue to grow at a slow but steady pace!

so far, the longest stage lengths on the saabs are right around 300 miles. yyz in ~440 from mdw, so I'd say no to that rumor.

Next year, I'd expect evv and cak...maybe FWA. SPI service might switch to Peoria. Other than those cities, we need a second a/c type -- and more space in MDW! Unless, of course, we decide to serve smaller cities (which I don't see happening right now.)

What's up with NW honoring your flight capons up in MSP? I had a guy last night who missed his TZ flight, paid to have his flt coupons printed, and went standby on NW. That's nice of them to do. Of course, he neglected to tell NW to check his bag through to TOL  Wink/being sarcastic

What ATA should be doing is adding frequency on routes to BOS, EWR, SEA, PHL, DCA (I know no slots at DCA but open IAD), and MIA. The new service to PVR and MBJ should be operated daily not just twice a week. On the Chicago Express side RJs should be added.

Just my thoughts anyway.

Why is ATA listed in summer schedule of Split (SPU) airport, Croatia? The aircraft is L1011, flight JFK-SPU.
Is (was) that a charter flight, or flights, or... nothing?

When's ATA gunna start MDW-MSY service? They have no competition on the route. They'd make a killing, and I know the ATA employees would like to see the airline open New Orleans!  Smile

Any hope for CMH? They could go into IND & have little or no competiton!
MDW may be a little harder, with HP & WN flying the same route.

Ambassadiar magazine is the travel club side of ATA holdings. This will be one of the five new divisions that George is talking about.

I would not expect to see an inflight Magazine anytime soon, it is most cost intensive than one would think.

joe:

As for NW honouring TZ coupons, I'm not sure. A similar occurance happened here at MSP. A pax missed his flt to FLL, and we had no more connections available that day to get him home. NW said they would honour the flt coupons if we printed them. They were NOT endorsed, per 120.20 or 240.40.

I think it's because everytime NW cxls a flt to MDW from MSP, we help bail them out no questions asked. We seem to work fairly well together at MSP. We certainly send them business, as well, if we have a late i/b a/c which causes pax to miss connections. NW is always choice #1 for repros.

Steve:

I would LOVE to see ATA open up flts to MSY. That would rock. I would also like us to open up service to either IAH, SAT, or AUS. But AUS and SAT are heavily WN. Who knows...

Cool...I'll have to do some research when I get back into work on accepting OA coupons (I love having three days off right in a row!)

Did you read the infoline message on the website? I feel none the more secure or informed having spent the time to understand George. Does he even know where the company is going? At least -- as far as I know -- C8 is making money! yay!

BTW - MSY and IAH would be awesome TZ cities!

Well, I'm off to Flint tomorrow...I'll have to bum up to MSP one of these weeks before school starts.

Two more tidbits:

63% of pilots have returned ALPA representation cards.
In the recent dry run of pref bidding, 73% of crewmembers participated.

I, for one, had no idea the first number was so high. It's also interesting to note that the second number come from the nascent ALPA committee at C8.
