New Interior MAS 737-400s

Thu Aug 08, 2002 3:29 pm

Hi all,

I was on 9M-MMI yesterday from SIN-KUL (en route to HKT) and I thought the jet looked new from the outside. For once, there was not a single dirty stain and the fuselage was factory fresh spanking shiny clean! A trip report will follow in 2 weeks...

I walked into the aircraft and what do you know - New interiors! Bulkheads are similar to what they have on the 777s, dark blue seats for First Class, Row 5 - 12 in Y Class are green (I can only think of clover green) and light blue for the rest of the seats till Row 27.

Latest updates, there are only 36 737-400s left in MAS's fleet. Does this still make them the largest 737 operators outside the USA?

But why didn't MAS publish this in the Media?

BTW, did they reduce the seats? I really hope they do, and put IFE in those MAS babies.

Cheers!

IFE for flights less than two hours? Most of the flights within Peninsular Malaysia are even below one hour and I don't think at all that there is a big demand for IFE. Compared to other airlines the seat comfort in the MAS 734 is not excellent but I would say around average. Good question anyway, did they remove seats?

I doubt they removed any seats. I remember reading in one of Ryan's trip reports that the new interior involved changes in the seat covers, and wall panels. I don't think the change goes deeper than the seat covers.

I could fold my legs like a woman! So it wasn't all that cramped in there... I could not do it on NW 747 and DC10...

In fact, the leading stewardess quickly told the rest of the crew to clean up whatever they could when all the pax disembarked in KUL so tat I could take photos of the cabin! She the proceeded to tell me that the seats used the same fabric as the 777 seats.

I shall try to post them when I return to Singapore, hopefully they won't be rejected.

Cheers
Ryan

About time too...

...about space on the 737 - MAS sets its seating in a rather standard way which is perfectly acceptable for such short runs. Try flying on BA's 737s (eg. LGW-ATH) or even Air France's 737s (which incidently some are ex-MAS machines) on the LHR-CDG route and there certainly isn't much room to swing a cat in...

Good to see some new interiors at MAS though. ps. Some of their 747-400s could do with a revamp too...

Good news indeed. And that's very nice of the cabin crew as well. Hope to see your pictures soon.

I remember when i last flew on thos 737s. Some of the ashtrays were broken, torn seat covers, windows scratched so badly, you could hardly see outside...
Its good to here that MAS are finally upgrading their 737s.

Great to hear that MAS are finally upgrading their B734 cabin! In my opinion, there should be at least a couple of B734 that offer IFEs. MAS still uses the B734 to fly to cities like Xiamen, Kaoshiung, Denpasar-Bali, Surabaya and Manila where the flying tmie is over 3 hours. But at least, you are not stucked in some dirty, old B734s. If they provide some IFEs and new cabin interiors, they could well use the B734s for another couple of years before chaing teir regional fleet. Same goes for the A330s, since all of them are relatively new.

By the way, I have to agree with Mas777 that MAS' B734 aren't that bad either, especially if you compare with European carriers. Take a look around their Business Class, and you will find the exact same seats as they are in the Economy Class, same seat width and pitch, just that you get a better meal, and you get the middle seat free, if you are flying on a B737s or the A320s family.

Perhaps some of MAS' 330s could be fitted with PTVs as some of the routes they fly are medium to long-haul.

It couldn't hurt to fit a couple of B734s with IFEs either. I flew on MH's KUL-BKI route, about 2h40m, and it got boring after reading the inflight mag twice. And not to mention the flight back, we got the same 'ol magazine. That's why now when i fly MH's 734s I pick up an "Archie" comic from the airport  Big thumbs up
