New AU Airline, Region Express Launches

Thu Aug 08, 2002 6:44 pm

Region Express, owned by Australiawide Airlines, has been created.

It was created by investors merged Kendell and Hazelton airlines.

It is 30% owned by Singaporean investors.

Region Express has approached Singapore Airlines Limited about possible alliances. Singapore Airlines annoys us again by saying, "We do not comment on speculative reports on our investments," Singapore Airlines spokesman Innes Willox said.

"Australiawide will continue to maintain essential regional air links to all communities previously served by Hazleton and Kendell. In addition the new schedule provides for an increase in service to some existing routes .... Australiawide will also look to begin flying to new destinations in NSW, South Australia and Victoria shortly," Australiawide chief executive officer Michael Jones said in a statement.

I thought this had already been discussed, but evidently it hasn't...

The 30% investment by 8 Singaporean individuals was not, I believe, an original part of the plan. It was only announced yesterday.

Anyway, for those of you interested, here is their website

One last thing, it is Regional Express, not Region Express.
