1980 DL And UA Routes For The DC8-71

Sat Aug 10, 2002 4:07 am

What routes did these two airlines fly their DC-8-71s in the 1980s. What were the typical replacement aircraft for these jets.

Delta flew them on many short segments like ATL-BHM & JAX. They were mainly replaced by 757s. United ran a lot of them to Hawaii.

Delta used them quite a bit between Atlanta and Savannah as well.

I've flown Delta's from ATL-JFK and ATL-EWR. I remember seeing United's 71's at JFK but not sure where they flew.

Back in the early 80's I've flown a United DC-8-71 from SEA to LAX.

In December 1984, I flew on a Delta DC-8-71 from DEN to ATL. Used to love those big windows. The return flight one week later was on a 767-200.

I remember in the late 70's flying a stretch DL DC-8 nonstop from MIA to SFO. What a wonderful experience that was.

Out of FLL till the very end.

This was a nice plane. It was actually longer than an L1011. If you sat at the very back you could see the aisle shift and twist inflight because of the long narrow fuselage.

I saw the bird in MSY all the time...had to be one of the last cities to see DL D8S service. They did some ATL and DFW flights from MSY. Saw them a lot, never flew on one.

Delta's June 1, 1981 schedule has DC-8's on the following routes: ATL to AGS, MCO, PHL, IAH, CAE, TPA, LAS, SAV, MSY, ORD, MIA, EWR, BOS, MEM, FLL, JAX, NAS, TYS, DTW, JFK; also DFW to LAS, MSY; MSY-MEM, TPA-JFK, BDL-EWR-MCO, MCO-JFK.

Hope this helps.

I think you're right Steve. I believe it was 1988 and MSY was one of the last stations. I can remember them diverting to BTR when MSY would close for weather. It made quite an impression on that little airport.

Not in the 80's, but my first and only experience with the DC-8 was with United in 1991 from IAD to DEN. Being assigned a window seat did not mean you were at a window. The windows were spaced out so much they actually had several rows without windows.

I remember flying a UA DC-8 SFO-SEA, also LAX-SFO, and saw them in Sacramento - probably from Denver or Chicago. My last trip was ORD-IAD in August 1991 not long before they retired them.
