Plane @SFO

Sat Aug 10, 2002 10:41 am

Yesterday (8th Aug) afternoon, there was a gray / white colored plane @SFO.
Rear mounted engines (either 2 or 4). I could not see properly.
T (whale tail), noisy.
It was not a DC-9/ MD 80.
It was much bigger that.
Was it Aeroflot IL62.
I know Aeroflot used to fly 767 on Moscow-Seattle_SFO route.
Anybody knows.

I saw it on Monday, and yesterday. Strangely, both times I saw it were when I was departing on 1R. The first time it took off before us, the second time it was landing on 28L.

The aircraft is a RAF converted Vickers VC-10. It is probably restored, and I don't know what it is doing here in the USA.

Did you notice the antenna on the radome, and the two pairs of rear-mounted engines?
no wire hangers!

I saw the same plane Monday morning at around 8:00am while arriving on a UA flight. It was taxiing from the area around the executive air terminal, down out to runway 1R. It was indeed a converted RAF VC-10, no windows, and obviously outfitted for military purposes, and I beleive an inflight tanker. It looked likr this:

Yes folks,
I think I saw this plane.
And I am so delighted to see a VC-10.
This is first time I have seen VC-10.
Thanks.
