Cathay Pacific Still Considering Iran?

Sat Aug 10, 2002 11:25 pm

Last year CX were evaluating Tehran as a possible future addition to their network targetting mainly transit traffic from the US west coast which has the worlds largest Iranian community centered mostly in Los Angeles, so is that still being considered or have plans been shelved?

I don't think the Americans are that stupid to start annoying and excluding the rest of the world just because of their foreign policy. If Cathay fly to Tehran, it will be to fly the Iranians to the US, where many of them live. If America was against this then why have any Iranians in the country at all? My guess if that many of these people probably hold US citizenships now anyway, and even Bush would not be stupid enough to start banning airlines from flying there!

LOL! Somehow, Bush doesn't strike me as that dumb...... Banning CX just because it flies to Iran? So what about AA flying to Cuba then?

Hmm, it'll be cool having CX fly to more "exotic locations".....

A lot of European airlines serve Tehran, don't they? And the US government has not banned them. So I think it's OK.

Will CX want to fly to Iran, considering Bush and Blair (BB  Smile) are practically hinting at all-out war against Iraq...

Even if CX do start services to Tehran, it probably won't be non-stop, so where would they route via? Perhaps use it as a stepping stone to Istanbul or Riyadh?

Could the AA flights be chartered, as Continental do charter flights between MIA & JFK to various Cuban cities?

As for CX's plans for Tehran, if they were to start services to the city, which in the current global climate would be very unlikely, it wouldn't be a direct service as the demand for HKG-Tehran non-stop isn't sufficient enough to warrant a direct flight. What city could they use as a stop-over point? Alternatively, they can fly to Tehran and then onto another destination in Europe?

It would be cool to see CX open up more routes, and Tehran would be an intriguing addition to their route network!!

Yes, I was glad to see so many East Asian's expand into the unusal Middle East routes, like CX, Thai, Singapore, Malaysia and Asiana to Turkey, Garuda Indonesia to Jordan, Sri Lankan, and Malaysia to Lebanon, JAL, Korean Air and Royal Brunei to Egypt sad that some of the services ended. Any planning to add Syria?

CX suspended IST some time ago, which is quite surprising considering they've expanded their presence in the Middle East. It was a direct service to IST from Hong Kong so it probably didn't turn out to be a very high-yield route.
