Flight Times Between Asia And California

Sun Aug 11, 2002 3:57 pm

I've heard rumors about SIA flying a 346 non-stop to California from SIN.
Does anyone have any guess to the flight durations of such a flight?
My guess would be 16 hours for SIN-SFO and 18 hours for SFO-SIN (if that leg is even possible).
If my numbers are correct, the flight would arrive in San Francisco about the same time it left Singapore: A 1pm take off would land in San Francisco at 1pm.
Unfortunately, the local landing time would be 34 hours after the take off locally in San Francisco (1 PM PST, Arrive in Singapore at 11pm Singapore time a day later).
It is a problem that flights to SE Asia have. They either must leave California at awful times (middle of the night), or arrive in Singapore at an awful time (middle of the night).
Do airlines look at this when scheduling long-haul flights? I know UA has all their Asian flights arrive in SFO in the morning.

Just to correct, Singapore do intend to fly their A340-500 (not -600, which they haven't ordered) between SIN and LAX, in an F and J only layout (about 180-200 pax I believe).

How many hours will that SIN-LAX flight be, and, w/ that layout, will it be profitable? Spark asks some good questions, it will be interesting to see if anyone out there has some good insight into the logistics the airlines face witht these Asian long hauls.

UA was supposed to start a DEL-SFO non stop flight time was estimated to be around 17 hours because of extremely favourable tailwinds . This flight was supposed to use the Polar 1 route . Unfortunately 9/11 caused these plans to stop completely . UA had also negotiated a deal with iridium for communiactions beyond 82 deg N .

I couldn't imagine being in ANY economy seat for more than 15 hours.

But, Business (especially SIA's Raffles Class, the only time I actually PAID for a business class ticket) or First (I've not experienced this, as I'm still pretty poor, relatively speaking) is OK for me, since I can sleep flat, or nearly flat, and plug in my laptop and play games the whole flight.  Smile

I wasn't aware SQ would fly the A345 on an only F-J config basis.
This will be the most exlusive flight on earth !!!

Does SQ plan to fly the A345 on other routes ??
