Anybody know when did UA start fly into Asia?
What kind of aircraft they use?
Which cities they serve when they first start fly into Asia?

I believe it was 1985 on the Seattle Tokyo route using a 747-200. I may be wrong about hte year but the route I know. This was before they bought Pan Am's Pacific division at which time they had to give up the Seattle route.

i think it might have been closer to '81 or '82. i lived in PDX, which used to alternate w/SEA on that route once a week (fairly certain it was tuesdays). the middle school i went to had a view of PDX from about 2 miles away, and i skipped the occasional class to catch it's mid-day turnaround.

Most of the Asia routes were purchased from Pan Am.

I know they first served AKL in 1986, they took over from Pan AM, don't know what aircraft was first I think it was the 741. UA didn't get the 742 until 1987 of which they got just 2 747-222's, they later purchased 7 747-238's off Qantas!

If I remember correctly, UA flew SEA-HKG using using DC-10-30's with extra fuel tanks leased from CP Air back in the early 1980's. I remember seeing that plane at HKG back then....

As for UA's large hub in NRT, that's a consequence of UA taking over Pan Am's Pacific Division--PA had a hub back at TYO (as HND was known back then) for many years. NW also has a hub at NRT because of the fact NW provided much assistance in creating JL back in the late 1940's.
