Iberia B747 Emergency Landing At JFK/Engine Fire

Mon Aug 12, 2002 9:57 am

Definately a sight to see today, Iberia B747 just took off for Spain from JFK, returned for emergency landing with what appeared to be both right side engines on fire, sparks and flames everywhere, amazing that no one was hurt. Aircraft landed safely on 13R, about 650pm, passengers evacuated via emergency chutes on runway, should actually still be sitting there, all traffic now on 22R.

Heya,

Was spotting today with a freind from Terminal 1...and was wondering why AZ was not moving when we saw the 747 come around on a hard final. At first, looked like it landed hard but as it came closer saw the engine fire.

Glad to hear everyone made it out safely, just saw it on the news as well.

Also, it was the left side engines. Pax were evacuated by the right side slides I believe, they were also lined up against the fence on 13R until busses arrived.....

Definitely a sight to see.

Thats right, it was the left side engines, and the passengers came out of the slides on the right. Poor Alitalia, I also saw their MD-11 sitting out there for about an hour, they had actually pushed back from the gate since 6pm, but went back to the gate, when they finally pushed out for taxi at 6:40pm, Iberia came in on emergency final 10 minutes later, resulting in a one hour hold delay on the Terminal 1 ramp. Hate to see what the delays look like right now, 13R is usually pretty busy in the afternoon.

There were 386 people on the plane.

I had no idea Iberia could get that many people on a 747 from JFK-MAD, with all the airlines flying to Madrid from the NY area and else where.

Thankfully no one was hurt.

I´ve just read that one of the slides didn´t work so all passengers had to use the other ones.
Is it right that two engines were on fire?

It was only 1 engine, #2 engine that was on fire, I believe.

I just saw NY1 news and they are reporting that the two rear emergency exit chutes did not deploy and that the pax rushed to the over wing exits. Supposedly this is where most of the injuries occurred. Is there a way to tell if emergency chutes are inoperable b4 use? How often are the emergency chutes checked to see if they are working properly? Is this done during routine maintenance or is there a specific time period for the checks ie: C or D checks? Anyone with info, please reply. Thanks.

An Iberia 747-200 turned back to JFK Airport shortly after teakeoff. A fire warning light came on in the cockpit.

386 passengers and crew were evacuated as it landed at 1920 local time yesterday.

Five people were taken to hospital with evacuation injuries. A 56 year old man had serious head injuries and a 60 year old lost consciousness.

"While he was taking off, it was all smoke. We saw it from the passenger compartment," Georg Hutter said. "The engine was taking more fire, the flames were coming more and more."

One of the emergency exits didn't work, so the whole pax had to leave the plane using only one exit, that could cause the injuries.

Here is the official release from the Iberia website. It does not mention a defective slide.

"
EMERGENCY EVACUATION IN NEW YORK; FOUR PEOPLE SLIGHTLY INJURED REMAIN IN HOSPITAL

EMERGENCY EVACUATION IN NEW YORK; FOUR PEOPLE SLIGHTLY INJURED REMAIN IN HOSPITAL
The aircraft returned immediately after takeoff when an engine caught fire

Madrid, 12 August, 2002 Time 08,00 GMT

Only four Iberia passengers, slightly injured during an emergency evacuation in New York, remain in hospital, three in observation and one woman with a broken ankle. For the latter, Iberia will provide an air ambulance to fly her to her city of origin, as requested by her family.

The injuries occurred at New York’s JFK airport as the passengers slid down emergency chutes to evacuate the aircraft scheduled to fly from New York to Madrid at 18:20 local time. Immediately following takeoff one of the four engines (engine no. 2) burst into flame. The crew shut down the engine and returned immediately, making a normal landing.

Most passengers and crew were unharmed, but a few people suffered bruises and scratches when evacuating the aircraft by sliding down the emergency chutes. Eight were taken to hospital, and four were immediately released.

The Boeing 747 was carrying 369 passengers and a crew of 17 (three pilots, a flight engineers and 13 cabin attendants. The flight number was IB6250.

The passengers, most of whom spent the night in hotels or their homes, are being put on other Iberia flights or those of other companies.

The cause of the fire has yet to be determined but an investigation is now underway. The aircraft had undergone routine inspection procedures prior to the takeoff."

Looks like only number 2 was on fire. The news in Spain is that one of the emergency slides didn't work.

According to the news articles I read today on this subject, the plane would not climb higher than about a 1000 ft, and appearantly the pilots had a hard time maintaining altitude, as the plane's information screens in the cabin indicated the actual altitude to the passengers. At least two eye-witness reports I have read state that they went from 1000 ft to 700 ft to 400 ft and back to some 700 ft.

Also, none of the news I read about this said anything about the dumping of fuel. Could this plane land without dumping fuel when it was supposed to make a cross-atlantic flight to Madrid?

Schoenorama,

I'd like to know which articles you read, being that I was at JFK and watched the IB 742 both take-off and come in on final approach/landing....and can definitely say that the aircraft was higher than 1000ft when I first saw it on it's final to 13R @ JFK....

Please provide links to those articles, otherwise, I'd discount your data...

Photo Of Iberia 747's Passenger Evacuating At JFK

Wed Aug 14, 2002 12:41 pm

Passengers from Iberia Airlines Madrid-bound Flight 6250 make their way from a Boeing 747 jumbo passenger plane after it made an emergency landing at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York Sunday evening, Aug. 11, 2002. An Iberia spokeswoman said the plane had only reached an altitude of 1,000 feet but was turned around once pilots realized one of the plane's four engines was on fire. Everone on board was evacuated while firefighters put out the fire, but two passengers were hospitalized with injuries sustained in the evacuation. (AP Photo/Raleigh Souther)
