Wow that didn't last. And AA is ending JFK-GIG service too, on the same date (3Sep02)! They were going to introduce same-plane JFK-GRU-GIG, but now they are doing same plane DFW-GRU-GIG instead. This leaves GIG with just a daily to Atlanta and 26x a week to Miami (though TAM is planning an MIA-GIG flight for 2003). I was wondering if you possibly see any changes coming up for secondary Miami-Brazil routes, like the return of Fortazela and Recife? Varig is planning to re-start both those routes sometime this winter season.

Although GIG-JFK service is ending, Varig will begin GIG-MAD nonstop service on Sept. 8 (2 times a week), using a 767.

Also RG's GIG-GRU-MAO-CCS and GIG-GRU-MAO-BOG will change back to GIG-GRU-CCS and GIG-GRU-BOG on Sept. 2. The aircraft will be upgraded from a 737-800 to 767.

It looks like GIG-JFK won't be cancelled after all, just suspended. GIG-JFK on Varig will be re-launched on Dec. 1, 4 times a week.

Here's a little more info:

From Travel Weekly:
Varig changes CEO, to suspend N.Y.-Sao Paulo (8/20/2002)

NEW YORK -- Brazilian airline Varig changed its leadership Aug. 19 amid continuing financial troubles caused in part by the country's troubled currency, and service on its New York-Sao Paulo route will be suspended at the end of this month, a spokesman said.
That service is scheduled to resume Dec. 1 for peak season, and the rest of the airline's current service to Los Angeles, Miami and New York is scheduled to continue uninterrupted, he said. Varig pays 5% uncapped.

Arnim Lore, who had been financial director for Varig regional subsidiary Rio Sul, was named the company's chief executive Aug. 19, replacing Ozires Silva. The airline is trying to reduce about $900 million in long-term debt and bring in new capital, the spokesman said.

I think the article meant GIG will be suspended until 12/02, but GRU will continue as normal.
