San Diego And Regional

Tue Aug 13, 2002 11:32 pm

Confusing sounding name, but about eight years ago when I used to go to San Diego all the time, there was a larger presence of AE, they were flying to other cities than LAX, why did they cut the opperation, and was there not another regional airline that flew between LAX and SAN besides United Express and Americna Eagle?

Golden West was a major presence in the Southern California commuter market when I was growing up in LA in the 60's-80's. Could that be who you were thinking of?

You are probably thinking of USAir Express operated by TransStates in California including SAN. I had to use them on several reroutings.

I flew Trans States up to LAX once, because my nonstop flight to MSP had been canceled. I remeber the aircraft being a Gulfstream of some sort...32, perhaps? I also very very vaguely remember seeing USAir Express Beechcraft at SAN way back when (maybe 8 or 9 years ago).

San Diego has had various regionals come and go. Tom in NO is right that Golden West used to serve San Diego with Twin Otters, Shorts 330s, and later Dash 7s. Imperial Airlines flew Embraer Bandeirantes every half hour to Los Angeles in the early-mid 80s as well. Other carriers included Sun Air and Swift Aire. Sky West flew in Metros, and Trans States flew in those Jetstreams.
