Should I Be Afraid To Fly Northwest?

Wed Aug 14, 2002 6:09 am

Hi!

I am flying NWA on Sunday from EWR-MSP-FAI.
I have heard so many bad things I am wondering if we should have payed the extra money to our cruise line to switch airlines.

What can I expect.... or is there nothing to expect?

Thanks

JBLUA320-

I've personally flown over 200,000 miles on NW; you have nothing to worry about. NW has some of the best and most-respected maintenance facilities in the business. Although they have an old fleet (the oldest of the Big 10, I believe) they maintain their aircraft very well. I've also found the customer service on NW to be above-average in my 100-odd segments flown on NW/CO/KL codeshare flights. Enjoy your flight, it should be pleasant. And say hi, if you'd like, I'll be at the ATA ticket counter working, I'm sure!

Northwest has an EXCELLENT safety record. One of the best in the industry even I believe. So you have no reason to be afraid.

Nothing to be afraid, if anything is going to happen it could happen on any Airline.

I don't know, Sammy is afraid to fly on Northworst, shouldn't you be too?  Laugh out loud

Honestly, flying on Northwest is no different than any other carrier. TzMSP has over 200,000 miles on Northwest, and nothing has happened to him yet, so I'd say, you are worrying over nothing.

I wouldn't worry about it. NWA has a top notch maintenance program and good pilot's. You probably heard about the NW 757 that had an emergency landing today. Guess what, every major airline in the US has had an aircraft make an emergency landing at one time or another.

You should be more afraid of the body cavity search at the airport security checkpoint than flying Northwest.

TWFirst, why should he? I have heard that the security personnel uses
rubber gloves before they penetrate, so i wouldn't be too worried about
catching germs from bad manicure.

I flew MCO-MSP-FAR and back on northwest last month and it was better than i thought. We took a A320 to MSP and a VERY old Dc-9 to Fargo and i was surprised in how good condition it was still in, also it was a very comfy flight better than the A320!!!! so in my opinion its very safe

JBLUEA320:

I'll either be at the ATA ticket counter, or at Gate E4. If you want, I'll gladly escort you down on the ramp so you can look directly at the planes and show your our small ATA OPS center at MSP. Fun stuff for us airline nerds.  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Northwest has had less accidents than USAir, United or AA in the past 10 years.

Old Aircraft

Wed Aug 14, 2002 12:06 pm

People always seem to bring up the aspect that NW uses old aircraft, which is true. But it is not a bad thing. For starters, NW is in a better financial position than many airlines because they have less debt with aircraft payments. They own them outright. Why buy a new car if you have a perfectly good one sitting in the driveway?

The average flyer does not know much (if anything) about the type of plane they fly. So flying on an old DC-9 verses a new 717 is not something the average person even thinks about.

I bet that there is a forum for taxi drivers or school bus drivers in which they criticize certain cities or school systems for using cabs or buses that are older than some of the newer ones. But when I get in a cab, I don't look for the newest one. I don't move to a new city so my children can ride on a newer school bus. I have trust (which sometimes may be a bad thing) that a cab or bus will be in good shape.

NW is a good airline, and I have flown them many times. I have had good experiences and some not-so-good experiences, which can be said for almost every airline I have flown (oddly enough, Continental is one of my favorite success stories, and yet they recently majorly screwed up travel plans for a large group I was with. Life goes on.)

I wouldent be scared, but I wouldent expect to enjoy it. They will get you where you need to be, and it will most likely be on time too. Their domestic service is pretty nice (even the dc-9's), but no frills on long haul really sucks.

Really.............Did you think NWA was unsafe?

Other than the fact the FAA breathes down the airlines back for safety reasons. For an airline itself,it is not FINANCIALLY adviseable to be unsafe. If NWA had the rep for being unsafe, they would loose all the profit rich Y fare customers. All the profit rich customers flying to Asia. Lest not forget NWA has a formidable Cargo network too. No freight forwarder is going to risk loosing his product on a risky airline.

So yes,NWA is safe,so is any other airline that flies in the USA.

NWA is a great airline, I have done EWR-MSP-ANC, but not to FAI, they are great and one of the safest airlines.
