Question: Which Airline Invented The Combi

DC8-55 Combi:

1970's: Looking back I know KLM operated DC8-55 Combi aircraft with 80 seats in the rear part of the cabin. Freight was located just behind the cockpit (by the freight door location) and passengers boarded through the rear aircraft door.
A safety net and partition separated freight and passengers.

Cabin crew had to walk forward though the cargo cabin to bring food & drink to the cockpit crew. It was like riding in a separate coach at the back of the plane.

Routes operated were AMS-KWI and AMS-TIP, plus ships crew charters.

B747-200:
In 1974 KLM converted one of its standard B747-206 aircraft to combi. Loading cargo by hand through the left side rear pax door. All seats in the rear cabin had been taken out, apart from the right hand window triples. A length wise wall separated the 'cargo' area from the pax cabin creating a very long thin three seat wide pax cabin on the right hand side of the aircraft from door 23 to 25. Pax were travelling in a very thin three seat wide (and aisle) aircraft.

Does anyone know whether other airlines operated similar combi's and who was the first airline with this concept.

Combining freight with passengers goes back a long way - probably to the dawn of the airline industry. Imperial Airways flew mail and passengers on nearly all its flights in the 1920's and 30's. I'm sure Aer Lingus flew passengers and freight on their Carvairs and Viscounts in the 1960's.

BUA operated several combi VC10s to Africa and South America back in the 1960s.

The Carvairs were developed from DC4s to transport cars and their passengers (the name comes from Car via Air) by Freddie Laker.
