Why Is SQ Eliminating Lobsters In Raffles Class?

Why is SQ eliminating lobsters in Raffles Class?
(the Lobster Thermidor in the "book-the-cook" menu)

I just booked a SQ flight in Raffles Class from LAX to NRT,
using my DL miles.(had no idea award seats were so plentiful)

My friends who frequently fly on SQ recommended ordering
the Lobsters by calling SQ.

When I checked SQ's website to look at the BTC menu,
the Lobster Thermidor has been replaced by Seafood Thermidor.
(Lobster is still available for first class)

Did they make this change recently? Is it some sort of
cost-cutting measure? Why does SQ need to save a few bucks by getting rid of lobsters?

Just a thought here...

Last year I flew Vancouver to Melbourne on SQ. My colleague has a serious shellfish allergy. He has an epi pin but that doesn't help when you are halfway between Seoul and Vancouver. You can't guarantee that food will not contain trace amounts of allergants. He ate Nutra Bars for the entire 24 hours in the air!! I loved the food on SQ!!

Perhaps it is the same reason (serious allergies) that a lot of airlines have stopped serving peanuts. Again, just a thought but based on some experience..

Just another though here...

People say that SQ has pulled Caviar out from the main menu due to cost-cutting measures. Actually this is not right, it is actually because of the fact that supply of Caviar has been dropping quite rapidly and that the demand has still been on a high level. Prices would surely go up, but the main point is that there's not enough Caviar for everyone! For your information SQ still serves Caviar on night flights, medium - long haul first class.

It might be only a change of menu or so, I don't really think it'd be a cost-cutting measure afterall.

Best Regards

As far as I know the lobster thermidor has never been available as a book-the-cook option in business class.

Willing to be proved wrong though - anyone got any SOLID proof - such as an old SQ timetable with book-the-cook menu??

I second MilesDependent... I think lobster thermidor was only offered as a book-the-cook option in first class. Unfortunately I eBay-ed my old SQ timetables (got $10 for them!)....

It's to do with the cabin pressure causing discomfort to the lobster owing to its shell.

Backfire - yes that, and the fact that all animals with pincers or claws have been banned from the cabin in case they are used to hijack the aircraft.  Laugh out loud

Milesindependent is right, Lobster Thermidor was never offered in J class even when Book-the-cook was first introduced. I still have a copy of the P and J BTC booklet and can confirm that Lobster Thermidor was/is only offered in P class. The J class equivalent is Seafood Thermidor.
