Mysteries At Honolulu

Sun Aug 18, 2002 4:28 pm

Hi all

I saw 2 mysteries at Honolulu.

A friend and I were shooting photos under the approach path of runway 08L. Then we saw this twin jetliner on approach. Then the tree blocked the plane. That plane was never seen after that.  Confused It could have landed in barbers point station--but I doubt it.

Another time was at night. A medium sized plane landed on runway or 26R. But yet all planes landed/departed on 08R/08L. Why?  Confused

I don't know the runways, but if 26R is by the cargo aprons, it could have been a divert, or emergency. Also, it could be an overfilled stack. Sometimes, they use this runway in coordination with 8L & 8R...

Depending on where you were spotting from, the runways end of 8L is blocked by trees on the Hickam Golf Course. You can see the plane on final then it disappears and turns off around the midfield terminal (the AA DL part of the terminal). You cannot see this part of the terminal from Lagoon Drive.

Approach could have cleared AQ or HA to land on 26R at night, but because of the approach, IMO I would consider that to be something special like the channel approach (you probably won't see a 747 on a 26R approach at night, maybe 26L though). With the winds calm at night, any airliner could request any runway. What time did you see this plane? Was it close to 9-10 pm?

I saw it at 11 PM.

I was right under the approach path of 08L. Airplanes would fly over me.

Bring a scanner next time so you can hear which plane it is...
