You are a young person wanting to realize it's dream.
I doubt that the colour of your skin will prevent you from doing so.

So, go and make your dream come true!  Wink/being sarcastic

Indeed. What's the colour of your skin got to do with the jobs you can hold?
If anything, the US "equal opportunities" policies should make it easier for you as those effectively mean that blacks and women get preferential treatment for jobs...

Some airlines have African Americans as pilots. I saw a special about ATA and they had a African American pilot talking about the airline. It's the same thing with women. I'm planning to get my Pilots licence and my degree in Aviation Maintenance and I doubt that they will reject me because of my race.

ORD, a month ago...while waiting for my own flight, I watched an older African America gentleman climb into the left seat of a United 777 bound for SEA & Narita.

"Preferences" or not, you don't get to that seat without knowing your stuff. Good luck.

Ever seen that United commercial. One black man's a captain of an United Airlines A320, another black man is a captain of a United Boeing 747-400. I'm a teen too and want to be a pilot, skin color will not matter.

Actually, I think UA leads in terms of hiring African-American pilots. I have heard (pre-9/11) that 25% of the country's African-American pilots were at UA.

Best of luck to all of you who are pursuing the pilot career.

Hi Gregjet,

I am Caucasian, not African-American; but I understand that it is great to have heroes and role models that you can relate to.
Three items; First, one of the most remarkable individuals I have ever met in my aviation career is a gentleman by the name of Neal V. Loving. Neal was inducted into the Michigan Aviation Hall of Fame either in late 1997 or early 1998; read his book called "Loving's Love", an awesome story. I met Neal at the Air Force Museum in February, 1998 and we swapped letters a few times. Unfortunately, Neal passed away in December, 1998.
Second, I have a good friend who is African-American and a 757 captain for American Trans Air. He lives in Florida, South of Miami. If you are interested in hooking up with him, let me know. I'll have to check with him also to see if he would be able to chat with you on the web.
Third, I have a neighbor who is a Tuskegee Airman; would you be interested in writing him?
Also look up Benjamin Davis, Senior and Junior, Chappy James, and the Tuskegee Airmen on the web and in the library.
Aim high and don't give up.
Regards, Broke

I saw a lady on Oprah who is a black female captain for UA. I don't remember her name but it was funny hearing her recall how the pax would look when she'd crawl into the captain's seat.

I agree with Jwenting- Skin color has nothing to do with it, and if anything you may be looked upon favorably due to some "affirmative action" policies. Jetcareers.com has alot of info that should be very useful to you. Just don't give up...good luck man.

I must say that I am glad to see that everyone has been encouraging to Gregjet. The same question on other boards would have quickly disintegrated into very negative discussions about hiring policies and other issues.

Race doesn't matter, just a strong love of flying and the ability to follow through. This discussion emphasizes why, as a major airline pilot, I enjoy reading these Airliners.net boards.

Gregjet,

If you're interested in airline flying, you might want to look into the Organization of Black Airline Pilots, which has an excellent reputation. They have a great networking program in place and are active in mentoring young pilots. Look them up at http://www.obap.org. Good luck!

Gregjet. I assure you that you are not the only black teenager in the state that wants to be an airline pilot. I know nobody in Michigan, but the odds are that if you go to a flight school nearby, you will meet people of any color (well maybe not purple) with your dream.

I second (or twelfth) the point that the tone of your skin is of no impotance. When I get on an airplane I want people in the cockpit that want to see their family again. I figure if they want to live, they'll get me down safely.

Good luck and work hard. Tou'll make it.

I'm don't have an African background, so I don't know what it's like.
At any rate, go out there, make your mark and have a blast doing it  Smile .
The world's a different place than it was 30 years ago. More power to you and any other black teen who wants to be a pilot.

I flew SEA to MDW a couple of years ago on ATA, and I think the entire crew (cockpit and flight) were African American with the exception of maybe one of the cabin attendants....

Also, when living in Chicago, I have seen a fair number of African American pilots around - probably AA or UAL....

As with all others, just follow your dream.

Don't ever think about your skin color!
Pilots become pilots cause they have studied hard, and put other things in life to the side, to be able to become a pilot, and fulfill there dreams.
So go out there with your head up, and "kick ass" (fulfill your dream).  Smile

Best regards.

I work at DTW and I see a lot of black Northwest pilots, a lot of them fly on the International routes too on DC-10s and 744s.

I dont think race is an issue when it comes to being a pilot. Well i live in the caribbean.. so ton of our caribbean airline pilots are black.. Never really saw it as an issue. I am black and I am gonna be a pilot..

That reminds of a something I saw in the movie Ali.

When he went into the cockpit of the aircraft and saw the black captain.. He asked "what you guys gone and do with real pilot." ANd the guy replied he is the pilot. Ali.. was like damn.. "they dont even let us drive the bus back home." Thought that was funny...
There is something special about planes....
