That Sad Looking "hotel" At SMF

Thu Aug 22, 2002 2:30 pm

I was wondering if anyone has ever stayed at that really dive looking of a hotel situated in the parking lot at Sacramento Airport's Terminal 2. Its only two stories, is an ugly brown color and looks a lot like a Motel 6. It appears that none of the rooms have wondows (!).

Its located directly across from Terminal 2, so close in fact that the guest drop off is closed to vehicle traffic because its within the 300 ft security perimeter required by the FAA.

It's been years since I stayed at the hotel, but the website says that the rooms were remodeled last year.

As you can see there are windows, they just face the interior courtyard rather than the airport parking lot.

Which is also why the exterior corridors, giving the Motel 6 look. When I stayed some years ago I found the service good.

The hotel is operated by Marriott's Host division. The ugly brown color is the result of the hotel being built to match the design of SMF's original terminal complex, now known as Terminal B. I would imagine that with the opening of Terminal A some exterior update will be done in the near future.

A little history. The hotel at SMF was built to open at the same time that passenger service was moved from what is now Sacramento Executive Airport to the then completely new SMF. One concern when the airport was built in the 70's (1972 I believe) was that it was "way out of town" and there were no hotels in the area (the same problem facing many all new airports such as DEN). So SMF made sure there was an onsite hotel. With several conference rooms, the hotel also over the years has proven convenient for travellers to fly in from around California to hold 1 day meetings in the state's capital city.

I spent a night there 2 years ago, It was no different from any other Marriot/Hilton/Holiday Inn I've ever been at. I remember being reasonably surprised.

I was working about 1 and 1/2 hours out of town for two weeks and had a flight out first thing in the morning, so I drove up, and dropped off the rental the afternoon before, and stayed the last night in that hotel. Then woke up, took the shuttle to Terminal One, and flew home.

Worked out pretty good for me.

I'll promote one of Richard's pictures (taken in 1979): the hotel is to the right.

What is more sad looking is terminal 2 itself. Gotta love having a nice, fairly new, modern terminal, followed by an old, run down shabby looking terminal.
