Regional Jets In All Major Hubs?

Sat Aug 24, 2002 12:23 am

Have RJs caught on in all the U.S.'s hub airports? They just started heavy operations here in Denver not too long ago. I just went to Cleveland and was in a "jam" of RJs waiting to takeoff.

Does JFK have numerous RJ's yet? How about Las Vegas?

Okay, on the international front, what about Tokyo Narita, or LHR?

Anybody have info for Hub Airports that still don't have these RJs in numbers?

LHR has virtually no Regional Jets.

MIA is also pretty RJ-less. Just four daily RJ services, those are Comair to CVG and TLH. Later this year, we will also be getting RJs to MCO. In addition, we have Air France Regional RJs to POP (2x a day, but only 3x a week; the other four days it is AF A320s). That's it though.

CL operate some into FRA, but not that many. Their core routes are the second-tier airports.

Last year ORD became an RJ only station for American Eagle. Before then they had a mix of RJ's and ATR's.

LHR gets about 3 daily LH RJ rotations (CRJs with some Avro's),about 3 KLM daily F50 rotations+some ATR72s.BD also fly the F100+ERJ from time to time.

JFK, if I'm not mistaken, gets some DL and Amer.Eagle RJs and I think even gets a CO Express RJ. However, with all of the heavies that operate out of there, they are a very small percentage of all a/c transiting through JFK.

I think AAs Eagle operation at JFK is in fact fairly sizeable. Though, many of the flights may still be operated by the 340Bs.

LAS does in fact get some limited regional jet service from America West Express and Skywest.

America West Express:
1x daily FAT-LAS
1x daily SBA-LAS
1x daily SLC-LAS

Skywest:
1x daily SLC-LAS

There could be more but this was all I could think of....

There are very few regional jets in any major California airport. (Yes, I know that there are some at most airports, but not to the extent one would see at midwest, northeast, southern, and mountain hubs).

Several pilot groups have insisted to management that there be a limit on RJ flying, especially out of hubs and hub-to-hub flights.

Jhooper,

Several pilot groups are also being asked for wage concessions because the heavies aren't making money.
DAL is rich with RJ's and they stand the best chance of pulling out of this downturn intact.

The overwhelming majority of flight ops at KCLE are done with RJs. RJs account for, I think the statistic I read in the paper (this week), 65% of Continental's operations here. The only airline that does NOT run RJs at KCLE is America West; the only airline that doesn't run a majority of RJs is Northwest. (I don't count Southwest because they don't have RJs!)

Although the California hubs of LAX and SFO are not seeing many RJs yet (mainly as Shuttle replacements) compared to the east, here in Fresno we now see more RJs than turboprops. Since Fresno is among the largest of the "spoke" cities in the state, its a sign that California hubs will start seeing many more soon. The RJ breakdown looks like this:

SFO - 5X day on UAX (plus 3X day on props)
LAX - 2X day on UAX RJs, 1X day on AE RJs (plus 14X day on props)
LAS - 1X day on AWX (plus 3X day on props)
SEA - 2X day on Horizon
PDX - 1X day on Horizon
PHX - 5X day on AWX
DEN - 3X day on UAX
SLC - 4X day on DLConn

Total daily RJ flights at FAT = 24

EGGD:

I wouldn't be surprised, however, if we soon see this press release:

"Because of the overwhelming demand for RJ flights, our airline is proud to announce nonstop service SBA-NRT on our next generation of RJ's. These new jets are capable of flying 7000 miles with 30 passengers in comfortable 2 x1 seating. Passengers like this lay out, as they are assured either aisle or window (or both) seating! We are planning to use these jets on our "long and thin routes."

This announcement has been made already, by LH on the DUS-JFK flights, be it in B737-BBJ.

Technological progress will enable longer flights with even smaller planes in the next decade.

I can vouch for the RJs at JFK. We have several daily flights to JFK from CLE, on American Eagle and Continental Express. We used to have a Trans States (DL Connection) flight to JFK as well.
