Helicopter Shuttle "JFK-Pan Am Tower" NYC

Sat Aug 24, 2002 11:39 am

I am looking for any information on the Pan Am shuttle that ran between JFK Airport and the former Pan Am Tower on Park Avenue.

- Was it really a complimentary service for First and Business Class?
- How much was a ticket for other passengers?
- Does anybody know about the timetable of that service?
- What helicopters did they use and why and when was the service stopped?
- Where did the helicopters take off at JFK?
- Are there any pictures available?

This is what you're looking for?  Smile

Ah, the good old days of Pan Am...  Sad I really missed it. They used to allow first class passengers, even those using Worldpass FC awards, to fly on it...

As I recall, the service basically faded away after one of the helicopters crashed....  Sad

(disregard my remark about Worldpass awards, that was for a free limo service on FC awards)

I used to have photos of the helipad, but they are some where in my basement.

Even before the S-61s were used as pictured above, Boeing V-107s were used. I had the privilege of flying on one between JFK and EWR. There was room for about 17 passengers and 1 flight attendent. For part of the time PAs terminal at JFK was used and for a while they departed from TWAs terminal.

Pan Am also operated in the '80s to the Wall street heliport using more modern helios for which the name escapes me, they looked like the one from Airwolf in Pan Am colors.

If you ever watch the movie Scarface, Tony flies the Pan Am shuttle into the Wall Street heliport.

I wonder if that helicopter would take off that close to a 727.
Thanks for all the information!
