Two New Aircraft That I Am Now A Big Fan Of....

Sat Aug 24, 2002 3:24 pm

The Boeing 717-200 and the 767-400.

Due to business I had the dubious task of traveling to Hawaii for a week and a half. Continental got me there and back on one of their new 764's and Hawaiian took me to four of the islands with their new 712's.

I was quite impressed with CO's 764. Exceedingly roomy, great storage space, quiet cabin and a rather smooth ride. Take off and climb out was quick, and touch down was like a feather. Not to mention the bank turn into HNL, that was one to remember for sure. Coming back was a bit more bumpy due to high clouds, but no less comfortable, in fact I am pretty sure it was the same aircraft. I have not had the opportunity to fly any of the older versions of the 767 series, but this one was a hit with me.

The 717 was fun to fly on, and I did it 6 times. Plenty of overhead for my carry ons, and the seats. Now I am one of those guys that traditionally has to bring up the armrest to sit comfortably, so by instinct I had it up anticipating that no one would sit next to me. Well it started to look like a full flight so I put the arm rest down, and low and behold my rear end fit with room to spare. Which worked out well for the aspiring actress from New York who was visiting friends that sat next to me. I also had the opportunity to chat up a pilot after a flight from Lihue, Kauai to Honolulu. He praised the aircraft for its efficiency (less than 2K lbs. of fuel for that hop) and for its ability to "cut corners in the sky" for quicker flight times.

All in all great experiences on great aircraft. I'd be interested in hearing any of ya'lls experiences on these......

One thing that did suck was that I was "randomly" selected for search each of the 6 times I flew with Hawaiian. Finally spoke to a representative in Kauai and she told me that it was on my record, so each time I fly with them I will be selected for search. I think it is because I bought coupons for flight. Normally they charge around $85 a ticket but you can buy a set of 6 for $408, I went that route.

There's a simple response to that, J: Aloha! It's another example of the stupid security policies in place. You'd think that after the 4th or 5th occasion, they'd have worked out that you don't pose a threat.

If they willing to promise that you would be removed from the "search" list, I'd contact my lawyer and persuade them in a way they might understand a little better!

I haven't flown on the 717, but hope to do it next year. The 764 is an excellent aircraft. I flew it from LGW to EWR in June 2001 (yes, the good old days, when flying was fun) and it was such a nice and pleasant experience. CO was good, the aircraft was spacious and the trip was such a dream. It's a pity that the 764 has been such a failure; it deserved better.

I would say that the 767-400 is a disappointment in sales, but not a failure as an aircraft.
I'm not a real aeronautical engineer, I just play one on Airliners.net.

I don't think it's been a failure. Boeing originally desigend it for Delta, and now both Deltaflot and Conti are flying them... not many, but remember- it costs them nothing to NOT make a 764- they roll down the same line as the 763.

I LOVE the 717. I flew TWA's examples, and found them to be great aircraft.

I don't think that I would contact my lawyer about anything. So what? I don't think we understood correctly. I think that it was on THIS record locator. I myself went to Hawaii this summer, and flew Aloha Airlines (which was a BIG dissappointment- no wonder they are so near bankruptcy that they tried to merge with Hawaiian, I might add). EVERY SINGLE FLIGHT (5 out of 5) I was "randomly" searched. My most extensive search happened in Lihue as well, on my way to Honolulu for a connection to Dallas. So I think it was on THIS record locator- you had been randomly selected at the time of your ticket purchase BY THE COMPUTER. Next time you book, you might not get randomly selected. That's how I interpret that, anyway.

Funny thing was that Aloha and Hawaiin both had comparable fares, why would I want to fly on a 732 when the brand new 712's are the same price? Other than nostalgia of course. As for the security searching, I think the fact that I purchased 6 one way tickets brought up the flags. I understand the need for security, but when I can go up to the secuirty people and tell them that I am on the list I think it smacks in the face of serious security checks.

I say, let me sit at the gate and pick the people that need to be searched, would save time and I could avoid having 5 and 6 year old girls stand there spread eagle so they could be checked with the metal detector. No shit, can't make that up.
