Fleet commonality. Delta did not want a combination of Airbus and Boeing aircraft. As Delta had and still has a cozy relationship with Boeing, it made sense to dump the Airbuses.

I can't remember for sure, but I think by 94/95 they were gone. The A310's were a real PITA to work on and most of my co-workers were glad to see them go.

Teva,

Only the A310-200s (7 I believe) are now with FedEx, the others were spread throughout the world, with many operators (Air Jamaica and tarom being two that I know of).

Did the Delta A310s have screens (for the IFE) that hung down over the center rows of seats? I am not talking about at the bulkhead, but actually towards the center of the main cabin. I am trying to figure out if I was on one of the DL A310s. This was about the early 1990s and was a Florida to ATL flight, but the only thing I can remember about this specific aircraft was that I was in the center seating section (I don't remember whether there were 4 or 5 seats), and that in front of the row in front of me there was a screen that was hanging from the cabin ceiling. Did any of the Delta widebodies have a feature like this, or were there only video screens at the bulkheads?

I know it sounds vague, but thanks for any info on this.

I think you were on an L1011. When I flew on them in '95 they had detachable screens on the center.

The A310s were a REAL PAIN for Delta. They were always breaking down, and DL was always having to get spare parts that cost extra money, so they dumped them. Simple.

The last pic in this database is dated April 96.

Some of DL's 767-300s have the hanging screens in the aft cabin about half way back. They hang from the bottom of the center section of the overhead bins. Others have the tv screens in the celings of the isles. Last flight I was on to DFW, the FA's forgot to take the screen down until the very last second before we landed. They came running down the row and pulled it off the celing. There's no way they made it to their seats before touchdown.  Smile

I didn't realize that so many Delta aircraft had the hanging screens. I do not remember seeing the hanging screens on the L1011s or the 767s that I have flown with them, so that made me think that maybe only the A310s had them. Oh well, looks like I will never know then.  Sad

Thanks for the info, though.

I also read that the Airbuses were not particularly well cared for while with Pan Am and that they came to Delta in pretty bad shape. Is this true?

After they received the PAN AM A310's, they ordered nine direct from Airbus.

I think they did have screens as you describe during their Pan Am lives, don't know about DL. A lot of DL people complain about them, management seemed happy because they bought more, but in general the A310 isn't anybodies favourite plane.

Fanofjets I don't know about the A310s exactly but when UA bought PA's pacific routes they spent about twice as much as they expected in order to get the inherited 747 SP's in proper shape. I spoke with a woman who left WA/DL to go work as a flight attendant for Pan Am in the mid-80s (so she could use her foreign language skills). She was taken aback at the condition of the A310s, which were fairly new at the time. It seems sometimes basic stuff like the PA system would not operate properly.

I don't get the impression that Airbus manufacturing quality is poor, so I too would like to know if DL found a big difference between the inherited Pan Am A310s and the ones they leased from Airbus later.
