ATA L10-11 Flies Into Pns!

Sun Aug 25, 2002 10:50 am

For many of you who live around major airports, seeing an
L-1011 arrive is nothing terribly major but when the average traffice into your airport are MD-88's, 37's and RJ's an arrival of an L-1011 calls for celebration...
at around 1545 today, an ATA L10-11 touched down with 280 military personal, the flight came in from San Diego and it took four charter buses to carry all the folks away....the arrival of this large airplane was such a big event the local television station was at the airport taking video and interviewing various folks, airport director etc.
The airplane left empty, as our runway in PNS is pretty short only 7,000 feet long, I was astounded how well the airplane practically launched into the air....the plane flew back to Indeanapolis for its next charter I suppose...the captain I spoke to said the L10's only do charters now.
It was an awesome day indeed to say the least....

Wow.. that's a big plane for PNS.. the largest plane I've flown into PNS on was the 737 (or MD88, whichever is bigger). I woulda loved to be there to see it, I'm sure it was a sight to see. I've seen the L10 come into JFK a couple of times, but from far away. I hope you got some pics...

I was looking for some kinda footage on wear3.com but nothing was there... which station was it that was at PNS, or I guess it wasn't important enough for WEAR to put it online..

AA had DC10's, and DL had L1011's at LGA in the past... 7000ft runway.

One of the pleasures of my frequent visits to BWI, is seeing all those ATA L-1011's. It's like an endangered species of which there are few left, and this is one of the only zoos that has them. Sometimes I'll see 4 or 5 ATA L-1011's at BWI at once.

Like the one at PNS, these L-1011's are operated for the military, which has a big charter operation at BWI.

Yeah, it was an amazing site, I, myself didnt get any pics but a few folks who work with GAT
(General Aviation Terminal) they actually worked the flight, downloaded the bags etc, anyway a couple guys I know at GAT got several shots of the plane.
It was Wear channel 3 that was there, and may I add the female photo journalist was kinda rude complaining I was in her way of getting some footage, but non the less..you might trying looking again on www.weartv.com
not sure probably didnt put it on there website...
as far as the runway length in PNS, I was chatting with a Continental 777 captain a couple months ago and asked him, you think you could get that puppy into P, cola, he said, "well, I might could get her with a loaded ship but theres no way I could get her out. And when I was chatting with the ATA captain today, I asked you think you can get this bird outta here, as he was charting his graphs and what not...."ahhh, he said, no problem, but if we were full it would be really tough".
So, this is how I determined that a 7k foot runway is a tad short, and it was funny all the while this flight was on the ground, a fire truck stood by ready until the ship lifted off.....again was a joy to see today.

So IND is one of the few other zoos that has specimens of the endangered species too.  Smile ATA's HQ, that makes sense.

In GPT we only get DC9s, and 737s, and 717s, and RJs. But the largest I have seen is the 747-200, and we are soon to get the Concorde for a one day charter which I am taking the day off of school to go see.

7000ft? That's almost 3500m ... that's plenty of runway for most types .. TWA and BA operated full L-1011's out of Oslo-Fornebu (4500ft/2200m).
There were weight restrictions, sure - but no problems for operating a 2-3 hour flight. SAS 767's operated daily to EWR without serious restrictions.
PNS may have some restrictions because of the temperature ... assume that's what they mean. If PNS really has a 7000ft runway, I can't understand why a 777 would have any problems, it requires less runway than a 1011 ...

I know about the L10 at LGA. I was on a DL L10 about 5? years ago from LGA to ATL... What a great flight.. I can remember the takeoff being so bumpy and everything rattling... Too bad LGA doesn't get those big planes anymore.

I know what you mean, DCA-ROCguy....

I saw an ATA L-1011 (with the Pleasant Hawaii Vacations titles) at Cancun in June, parked near the Jordanian royal flight L-1011-500 - wow, two TriStars in the same view - alas a rarity these days!

The 764 is no longer flown into LGA, and by big planes I meant the really heavies (i.e. MD11, 777, 340 etc..)

That might be one of the first widebodies in the history of PNS. I'm kind of surprised they didn't just fly directly into the Naval Air Station which has 8,000 ft runways.

17/35 which is the 7,000ft runway that the L10 used is scheduled to be lengthened to 8,500 ft sometime before 2010. Also, 18/26 is supposed to be extended from 6,000ft to 7,000ft and have ILS installed. Of course, that's if PNS can get the funding.

Thanks for the update, Jmh.

Please go back and re-read my post. I never said the 767 wasn't a real heavy, I just said it wasn't a really heavy jet (like the MD11's etc..). I'm sorry, but 767-200/300's and 757's get old quick at LGA. I would rather have M11's, 777's etc.. into LGA, but that's probably never going to happen.

I don't understand the ATA captain's comment of the L1011 not being able to take off from PNS's 7,000 foot runway with a load. LGA has 7,000 runways and I frequently flew on DL's L1011 flight from LGA to PBI. I also wouldn't want to be on those buses, 280 pax get off the airplane and get on 4 buses. Not even DL can pack them in that tight.

Well,
Seems several of you question the validity of weather the 7,000 foot runway I spoke of in PNS could handle a large airplane. Im not a pilot, but I tend to believe what I am told when a Continental 777 captain, who has nearly 30 years experience, I tend to believe em when he says it would be difficult to get a fully loaded 777 out of Pensacola, could it be done...ummm, maybe..with some effort..would it be worth the risk...I think not.
Let the fully loaded big birds stick to the 12,000 + plus runways...

As far runway 17/35 being extended, I was speaking with the exectutive manager of the Pensacola Regional Airport, a few weeks ago, presently they are resurfacing runways 08/26..they do work on the runway at night and close the airport about three days a week at 0000 . In the next two to three years they plan to resurface 17/35 and in doing so it will be closed throughout that time. Before they do that, they plan to extend 08/26 and that will be the active runway while 17/35 is being worked on. The manager said the present runway surfaces are nearly 30 years old and are in need of resurfacing. He said at this time there is no plan to extend to 17/35 , as he said there really isnt a need to do so, as traffic to the airport doesnt warrent such an extension. I did ask about funding, and he said all funding comes from airport user fees, you use the airport, you help pay for improvement projects, otherwise you dont. The airport improvement projects are a fully self contained intenty where no tax dollars are used.
Amen to that.
JMH
