BAA (UK) Could Shelve LHR T5 If Fees Not Increased

Mon Aug 26, 2002 3:30 am

British Airports Authority PLC could shelve the proposed Terminal 5 development at London Heathrow Airport if it is not allowed to raise landing charges, BAA CEO Mike Hodgkinson is reportedly saying.

The £2 500 000 000 / US$3 801 250 000 6 year late terminal could be shelved if landing fees are not allowed to be doubled.

Faliure to build the Terminal would be a total catastrophe for the UK's largest airline and 16 000 jobs could be endangered.

'In these circumstances according to the Government's own estimates, airports will become more and more crowded and fares could rise as much as £100 a passenger,' Mr. Hodgkinson said.

'It is inconceivable that the terminal would not be built. The regulator would not allow it. I just don't believe that BAA does not have the resources. If the charges are raised, we will have to pass on any increase to passengers, who will suffer. Unlike BAA we do not make a profit. They should cut their costs," said Andrew Cahn, British Airways Government and International Affairs.

'We are still considering the whole issue. We will not make the final decision until the end of January,' said the UK's Civil Aviation Authority.

Children throwing tantrums to get what they want; it's not at all unusual. Dire predictions and thinly veiled threats, "if we don't get our way". The CAA responded correctly. It will take the decision, the likelihood being that there will be a compromise - a fee increase, but not as much as BA feared or the CAA wanted. And believe it, T5 will be built. Or else . . .

More interesting news in today's UK papers is that BA is approaching householders in Sipson (a soon to be ex-village between the M4 and A4, where the new third runway will be built), to offer them compensation for the construction of the new runway through their front rooms. It's possible that other airlines may follow suit.

("So, does that mean we'll need to dig up the begonias?", "er, yes, madam, and the front lawn and basically the whole house between the front hedge and the garden shed - but all for a good cause"!)

How long will the new third runway be? Will it be spaced wide enough apart from 9L-27R to allow parallel operations?

LHR access is so much in demand that I shouldn't think BAA will have difficulty finding willing customers to fill up the gates on a fifth terminal. It only took four airlines to finance JFK T1.

I believe T5 was intended for BA/oneWorld use.

LHR could probabrly fill another 4 terminals-but they need another runway to do this and LHR doesnt have much room left.

Even if LHR is approved another runway, it will be a good few years away. T5 will increase capacity to around 80 million pax a year for LHR. Still don't see any additional room for a third runway at LHR?
