It Was Not The Best Landing...

Mon Aug 26, 2002 6:50 am

...I ever made. In fact, it was my worst in several weeks, but still, the airplane was in one piece, and I made an early turnoff so the hot-rod jet behind me could land.

But as I made the turn to Golf and cleared the active at ADS, the examiner in the right seat said, and I quote:

"Six months ago, you couldn't spell 'Private Pilot,' and now you are one.

For those of you who want to, and just haven't gotten around to it, I say (as my wife did three months ago) "you're not getting any younger- just do it!"

And I celebrated today by flying my wife and son to F35 (Possum Kingdom) and back. I know that many great adventures await me, in the sky.

"Pilot." I like the sound of it!

That is where I went today, on my first official adventure as a licensed pilot.

OK, he was trying to be cute in telling me that I passed. He only met me the day before.

BTW, he has been flying for 53 years. Has eleventeen-thousand hours. Loves flying. Loves being a check pilot. Nice guy, and gave me lots of good flying advice, stuff I know will be useful to me. It was good fun (esp. since I passed).

Possum Kingdom (or PK, as it's known around here) was originally to be named after a congressman, but when the dam was being constructed, th eworkers observed that there were thousands of possums (or Opossums, if you demand precision), that it was a veritable "possum kingdom." And the name stuck.

Very nice lake, very picturesque, and a very nice public-use airport.

There's a song by "Toadies" called "Possum Kingdom". It's such a good song.

Anyway, Sccutler, congrats. Maybe I'll try that someday.

Outstanding! Congratulations, and welcome to the best hobby/business/career anyone could have. Enjoy it, love it, and above all, fly smart and fly safe.

One smooth landing is skill. Two in a row is luck. Three in a row and someone is lying.

Congrats. Even if it wasn't your best landing, an examinor should be able to see through that.
He knows you're nervous and a good one takes that into account. He probably knows your instructor too and trusts him to not send you for a checkride if you're not good enough to pass.

Making the early turnoff was a good decision on your part, shows you are aware of other operations on the field. Certainly would have played a part and decreased the black mark of the not-stellar landing.

Congrats, and keep them up!
I wish I were flying

I forgot I wrote that...

"Eleventeen-thousand" is my way of noting that he has a heaping pile of hours, but I Know not how many. "Eleventeen" is a number stolen from Dennis the Menace.
