That is a shock - I would have thought it would be politically much more sensible to order the Airbus!

I think the reason why PIA ordered the 777-200ER is simple: they don't have any routes that require lots of over-ocean operations. That means they can fly the 772ER on their longer international routes with no major ETOPS concerns.

Besides, people do forget that PIA's routes east from KHI are subject to the poor weather of the Bay of Bengal; with the 772ER's higher climb rate, they can fly over that bad weather on routes to Southeast Asia.

Looking forward to hear exactly which types of 777s they are getting; read somewhere that they may get 777-200LRs eventually. Also hope the order is confirmed soon and first delivery date is announced. The777Man

Will they add the planes to the fleet or will they replace older planes?

I don't think that it would be a problem to use the 772ER on ocean operations and if you are flying from KHI to Southeast Asia or vv. I'm pretty sure that there would be enough space to climb before they "hit" the poor weather conditions. As per this it wouldn't make sense that airlines like SriLankan are operating all Airbus even on the Sri Lanka - South East Asia route...

I think its more a political issue to purchase Boeing iso Airbus.

PIA Should have ordered the A340 series aircraft or the A330-300 for it's medium haul routes.

Good to see the Boeing 777 get a new customer! The best airplane ever made! Hope Air India is next to order them.

...Hamid Nawaz Khan, the state-run airline's chairman, said the board had agreed to take delivery of three Boeing 777s and seven turboprop aircraft by 2003. He said the airline would also integrate Airbus A340 series aircraft into the passenger fleet and purchase two A310-300 freight aircraft in 2006...

So PIA is still getting A340, despite getting 777.

Why should they get A340? Is there something wrong with the 777? Does every Boeing order have to be about politics?

I heard that they could get 5 A340s for the price of 4 B772s as the 340s are second-hand.The only second hand 772s around are the BA non-ER GE ones.

It looks like PIA is getting A340's, A330's and A320's soon. It looks like they will be only getting three 777's in the next five years. I always thought they should get the A330 for medium haul routes.

(Here is a new article from a new site in Seattle) www.komotv.com

ISLAMABAD, PAKISTAN - Pakistan International Airlines on Monday announced a plan to replace its fleet with new Boeing and Airbus aircraft over the next 10 years.

Hamid Nawaz Khan, the state-run airline's chairman, said the board agreed to take delivery of three Boeing 777s and seven turboprop planes by 2003. He said the airline would also integrate Airbus A340-series aircraft into the passenger fleet and purchase two A310-300 freighters in 2006.

The board has not decided whether the aircraft will be purchased or leased or whether the planes will be new or used, Khan said.

The airline also plans to upgrade its short-range fleet with Boeing 737-400s and Airbus A320s, A321s and A333s and to phase out Boeing 737-300s by 2011.

The aircraft are part of a $2 billion replacement program to buy 11 planes by 2011. The average age of Pakistan International Airlines' planes is 23 years old.

"At present we even have 39-year-old planes in our fleet," Khan said.

He said the government would cover 15 percent of the planes' costs, while the rest would come from financial institutions. He said he hoped the current slump in the airplane market would help the airline get favorable terms on financing and prices, including discounts of up to 38 percent.

The government agreed earlier this month to provide $150 million over three years as equity to help the state-run airline finance the purchase of the first three planes.

The plan received a boost after the airline opened talks with the U.S. Export-Import Bank, which resumed financial assistance to Pakistan following Islamabad's support of the anti-terror coalition after Sept. 11.

The Export-Import Bank offered loan guarantees if the airline bought Boeing's 777-200 ER, and Airbus offered a long-term financing plan for new A340-300 aircraft.

The airline's improved financial performance - the government said it will post an operating profit this year - follows years of losses from inefficiency, higher fuel costs for older aircraft and overstaffing. The state-owned airline has 40 planes and 22,000 employees.

The Pakistan government confirmed earlier this month that Pakistan International Airlines had completed the acquisition of six used Boeing 747-300s which had been leased from Cathay Pacific Airways Ltd. over the past three years.

Hmmm... Seems they're doing a little EgyptAir, i.e. buying a few aircraft of every type... Wonder in how much this order was politically inspired (from both sides).. My guess is a lot.

Ohh well it again seems like we are getting no where and this may well be one of the 6 times every year PIA announces it is getting a certain kind of aircraft. But i thought they were for real this time since it was on national news on Friday night that PK would announce in 2 days whether it goes Boeing or Airbus.According to DAWN newspaper in Pakistan yesterday,it had a small column saying that the desicion had gone Airbus's way....... and now i hear from all you guys that PK is getting the B777!! i guess i will just go back to my old theory.......when i actually see something painted in PK colors i shall know what plane they got, till then i'd rather stay out of this topic.

PS: By the way i dont know what Bengal Bay weather RayChaung is talking about|??!!Ive flown out of KHI hundreds of times and i dont know bad weather system exists here!!

Agree to your theory KHI747!
But it will be hideous to have 777,A340 and 747 and A320 Alongside with 737-400.
Surely it will not be this sort of a combination.

There is only one thing in it that makes sense. They´re not in the hands of one manufacturer, so can always try to get best price for any follow-up order.

with the news the Biman are replacing their DC-10's and now likely that PIA will do something with its fleet, it seems as if air india is lagging behind the rest of the south asian countris...... shame on them!

Boeing in pdx
I don't think you got the point. I didn't say that is IS a politic issue and I didn't say that it is ALWAYS a politic issue if any airline buys Boeing. But I said it could be most probably a politic issue (don't think you could get the point why, huh?)

In general I would agree to KHI747's theory.

How about some 340 from Boeing. I believe Boeing still have some of these on hand.
Would Boeing get US ExIm Bank to finance Boeing A340s???

Nightcruiser,

PW100 wasn't making a joke. He is referring to the ex-SQ A340's Boeing has committed to remarket when they are replaced by 777-200ERs.

As far as the order itself goes, I'm surprised so many people here are shocked by the selection of the 777. PIA has constantly been saying that they wanted either 777s or A340s. Before, A340's were rumored to be the favorite because of much cheaper acquisition costs. Apparently Boeing was able to come down on their prices - which can be a good sign that they won't earn a penny by the deal. :-(

Sayem55,

Cathay's A340-600's are not replacing the Boeing 747-400's. They will be used on the routes that were formally serviced by the 747-300's and 747-200's.

Reggaebird,

What are you talking about ?. CX have not operated the 742 / 743 for YEARS. The A346 will start to replace the 744, not in one go but over time.

Bigmo747! Ofcourse PIA operates the A310s as well, but I particularly reffered to this order and I said that I don't think that PIA will have A340's along side with the 777 as the news link reported because they are competing airplanes, I mean they are to serve one purpose as their stats are similar so it will absolutely not be wise to have them both. Its better to decide which one serves the purpose better and stick to it rather than haveing the headache of maintaining them both.

Most people here missed the point and as that was exected, I started another thread giving the link to a news reporting site that was reporting that PIA has selected Airbus and not Boeing, however the "big brother" here thought that there was already one thread related to this goin on so I have reposted the topic and so it was deleted. I came to know about it later and now I am posting the link here. I don't think that the formal order has been placed and as KHI747 said, until something is seen in PIA colours, you shouldn't be sure.
