747-300s With -400 Type GE CF-6 Engines?

Tue Aug 27, 2002 2:22 am

I've noticed that some carriers with 743s have what looks like modern GE engines on them. The ones that come to mind are Iberia and Thai. Their engines are distinctively different from the CF-6s on AF's or KLM's -300s. Were they reengined or built like that? Hope there is some clarification. Thanks guys

Hadn't noticed that before, but you're right! According to Bill Harms' site, Iberia's and Thai's 747-300s indeed have CF6-80 engines, like the 747-400, instead of the CF6-50 found on other -300s. Strange... Maybe they were retrofitted at some point??

I Think, they came that way. I believe these where one of the last 300's built, and this was probably done so that Boeing and/or GE would not need to get more of the older CF6-50 rather place the newer CF6-80's because Boeing already had or was producing the 400's.

I have a 747 book around here somewhere that mentioned 742s and 743s built after a certain date had the more advanced engine nacelles from the 767s. I can't seem to locate the book to get specifics though.

Also maybe they were retrofitted. Iberia uses the 743 to MMMX. I am sure the 743 needs a lot of extra power to get out of Mexico City during the summer. Unless the 743 below is planning to depart next fall it will need all she's got to get out of this hot and high airport.

Air-India's two 747-337 Combis also have CF6-80C2 engines. And all of these are among the later 747-300's produced, around the same time as the first 747-400's
