United Bringing Back A 747-200

Fri Oct 15, 1999 10:15 am

This past month, United brought N151UA, a B747-222B (del. 03/19/87) out of storage (in Las Vegas) back to service. I believe this to be one of the 747-200s that flew the JFK-NRT route.

My question is why would they do this? And, why would they put this aircraft (del. 1987) into storage and keep 747s delivered as early as 1970 in service? Am I correct to say that they needed to do this to compensate for the last 3 B747-100s being retired last month?

While the 747-400s are good for trans-Pac flights, the -200s are good for flights to Hawaii. The 747-222Bs that were used for JFK-NRT were outfitted with only 274 seats or so (I'm not sure about the figure). They may do this to have a 747 Classic with ORD-HNL range as they may be retiring the DC10-30 that flies that route soon. Ask FLY777UAL, he should know!

Was the aircraft brought back for only a month or is it going to stay a while? This is good news for us 747-200 fans. You don't see many additions in the late 90's!

I have no clue as to why UA would do this...they still have the 747-100's operating, so maybe they did this to provide additional support for Hawaii flights. I was on Apollo today looking up loads for HNL, OGG, KOA, and LIH--all flights are oversold! (still...in OCTOBER!!!). The Hawaii thing would be my best bet. Another possibility would be the ORD-HNL route (in place of the 767-300 2-class), however I doubt that unless UA retired another DC-10-30...

Hmm....I will investigate!

I know of at least one route where they have taken off a 747-200. I have a reservation to fly from SFO to ORD on UA 152 on January 17. When I booked this flight it was a 747-200. Now it has been changed to a 757. What route might the 747 have been shifted to?

I think it'd almost have to be HNL...UA has thrown on a few extra 747-200's over there...

How strange...the October revisions for UA FA's came out (at the beginning of Oct, obv!), and they still had brand new revisions for the -100...hmmm...
