Midwest Express, Any Chance Of A Strike Next Week?

Tue Aug 27, 2002 2:20 pm

Expedia just sent me an email regarding my reservations
on Midwest Express next week.

What are the chances the flight attendants will actually
go on strike?

I think they will settle at the last minute. However, what the flight attendants are threatening to do is CHAOS (Create havoc around our system). This means they are targeting certain flights where they would/could literally walk off the flight, or not show up for.

I have a friend who works for Midwest Express as a ramp/gate agent. He told me a couple nights ago that the strike is being planned, but the airline will replace the striking f/as because, to quote him, "There are hundreds of people looking for f/a positions with our airline, so these people are expendable." My friend also said that the f/as are looking for a pay raise, among other things, and they will likely receive one, but not as much as they are asking for.

I'm flying YX on MKE-LAX next week, and am hoping things will go smoothly. I've been assured they will.

Hmmm. AFA claims that they may not "strike", but that they will implement CHAOS(tm) to disrupt service. So if you fly them next week, be prepared to potentially play a role in the FA's "message" to managment.

I bet they will settle at the last minute. I remember when HP's f/a's were getting their first contract in '99. The AFA did the same threats and HP did the same thing YX is doing. Right before midnight I will bet they will have a contract to vote on, although there is no guarantee the f/a's will approve it.

Maybe they won't strike. But the AFA in "helping" the customer has also caused many to book away, especially for travel over a holiday weekend. And with September bookings at all the airlines in the crapper, those were revenues that Midwest Express could ill afford to lose. Kind of makes you wonder how willing a company will be to grant "industry leading wages" when profits are in the tank, and the organization who represents the very people who want those wages have actively been encouraging travellers to book somewhere else. Absolutely asinine.

I don't see how that management letter is "intimidating". If the FAs strike or threaten CHAOS, then management can lock them out, fire them, etc, etc. This is a two-way street, where good and bad can happen to both sides.
