Olympic Long Haul

Wed Aug 28, 2002 4:41 pm

Anyone have any experience of the above. A colleague is going to South Africa next year. Cheapest flight is with Olympic from Manchester via Athens, but they have never flown with them before. Any info on experiences, aircraft type, inflight service levels, meals offered etc would be appreciated.

Well, the question is "if" Olympic will fly to JHB next year,

right now there are negotiations to sell a 51% stake to a private business man (called Bardiogiannis, he owns Panathinaikos Athens, and a few banks), should this negotiation fail, the government announced to cancel all intercontinental flights...

first of all, Athenian21 got it right.
If all the above happen then your friend might not fly to South Africa.
But if they won't, then he will fly B-734 from Manchester to Athens, and then A343 from Athens to Johannesbourg.
Good luck

Do you mean to say that Olympic will be staying on at MAN? What days and times do the ATH-JNB services operate?

There were talks of Olympic downsizing to become a "regional" carrier only. Anyway, there are many non-favourable comments about OA's inflight service floating around in this forum. I am surprised no one has offered any experiences yet!
Welcome to my starry one world alliance, a team in the sky!

Serivce was adequate, entertainment was fine, slept most of the way. The cabin staff vanished after the dinner was served and came back before landing

Well, unfortunately its true, the inflight service is not the finest,
...But not that worse
besides that, Olympic has a respectable security level, (last crash with a jet was about 30 years ago)
so at least your friend will
arrive alive,

When an airline offers very low fares.

Always ask yourself WHY ??

Don't spend money buying tickets months ahead on an airline that gives the impression it may NOT be able to fly you to your destination in 2003.

You are very likely to loose your money !!!!!!

It looks like that the negotiations, will fail
latest announcement today (29/08) from minister of traffic H.Berelis
" the Bardiogiannis Group "New Wings" has failed to assure full financial ability"
If New Wings won??t get a bank to "sponsor" them in near future,
OA could stop their i.con-service by end of next month...

Many Greeks living in the USA will be pissed if OA drops international services, many fly with OA from JFK to ATH. This will leave DL and World Airways that offer non-stop flights to ATH out of JFK.

I guess we should wait till end of next month  Smile

and should the government really cancel the flights

I`m pretty sure that other airlines will fill the leak which OA left,

SAA (meanwhile) announced to start the JHB run, as soon OA stops,
THAI wants to overtake the Australian Route and operate Athens as a hub
EMIRATES also want to operate Athens as a hub
DELTA will sure increase its Athens service, filling the leak with a 777
CONTINENTAL had also announced to start the Newark - Athens run (yes they still have plans, possible to run next summer schedule (2003))
(for those who think, but how? There`s no OpenSky agreement, the two main reasons why the US & Greece hadn`t an OpenSky agreement,
(1) was a terrorist group called 17 November which were targeting US citizens, has bin "eliminated" last month.
(2) the old Airport was a huge security leak, but by now members of the US senate visited El.Venizelos and expressed high satisfactory with its security.

G.Bush Jr. Also stated happily last month that the problem with "N17" is gone
and there is no further handicap between the US and Greece,)
so I guess OpenSky will not be a problem

G. Bush Jr knows nothing, he's just a stupid little man and a puppet as is the Greek Prime Minister too.

Although the replies are different than the question I think OA277 got it right.According to the usual timetable MAN-ATH with 734 and ATH-JNB with 340.The flight with the 734 will be with average (unfortunately any more) inflight service and with meal of the best as always (unless for demanding passengers who think airhostess are their dogs and always complain).Short a/c though if you've got used to A300 like me.For A340 ideal with a lot of space, music, movies etc.

And something about the rest.I don't think anyone knows for sure about the future of Olympic, the plans of other a/l about routes including ATH, any cut on OA's network etc unless s/he works in the aviation field (but if s/he does still will be rumours). The only people that have the best view what will happen are the few people of the gonvernment and bosses of Olympic who deal with that. And please don't be trapped by what they say on the press, at least not all.None of us know what will happen with either Vardinogiannis or other candidates. And definitely don't mix terrorism in Greece with OA and Olympics.Because someone called Bush said that we have terrorism in Greece and we're not safe so don't come for the Olympics.I strongly believe that we're the country with minor terrorism and the famous 17N is bull.... including the gonvernment and other countries' secret authorities (I personallt feel more insecure from the Albanians than the 17N).It's all about politics and if we don't wake up and take this great opportunity of the Olympics to change Greece 180 degrees to better it is us that we will loose.

I honestly want to say how I saw Greece these 2 weeks while I was guiding a friend who is not from Europe.I deceided sometimes to act like a tourist too and I can sadly say that we're not even in the average level to do the Olympics. If you just take into account some few basic things like the quality of the sport halls needed for the Olympics, the quality of living for athlets and visitors, the huge number of visitors and transportation as well as quality of accommodation (hotels) you will see that in mathematical logic we will have a huge problem.Although I'm now mostly in UK as a student and I've never thought of leaving my country because I don't like many things, I can see it's extremely difficult for me and others like me to change the status quo in Greece because you have to change the whole attitude of Greeks. And I mean the 'don't worry' way of living, their forgetfullness, the rousfeti and relations while you want to find a job, the non-professional way of thinking etc etc.I just expressed some worries I know in an extended way but forgive me.I would really like to read a reply.

I don´t care about politics, I`m just interested in Aviation

... I´m referring to official newspaper reports and news , just like most of the boys and girls of the forum. If it´s true or not; I don´t know...
but your right on don´t believe everything,
and indeed Greece isn´t ready for the Olympics yet, but I guess this is the wrong forum for this,
