Couple Sues For $5M Over Lost Cat
Lawsuit Targets Airline, Airport, Cargo Handlers

SAN FRANCISCO -- An airline is the target of a $5 million lawsuit for allegedly losing a cat.

A couple who moved from Canada to San Francisco say they had their 15-year-old tabby, named Fu, and four other cats with them last August.

They say when the plane arrived in San Francisco, Fu's crate had a big hole in the corner, the front door was broken and the cat was gone.

The suit was filed against Air Canada, its cargo handling company and individuals at San Francisco International Airport.

It charges negligence, infliction of emotional distress, and false advertising.

The couple's lawyer said it's the biggest lawsuit ever filed over a cat.

Plaintiffs can ask for anything they want. I've seen lawsuits from prisoners demanding ONE TRILLION DOLLARS (brouhahahahaha!). Whether they can prove their damages, let alone show liability on the part of the defendants, is another thing. If anything, they should get a new cat carrier and visit the local SPCA for a new cat.

So, their cat digs a hole out of their crate, bust the door and gets out. I'm sorry, but I don't see where the airline comes in other then the fact their riding on the airline's aircraft. The cargo people, ok, maybe they did handle it a little carelessly. And people at the airport, what did they do? These people are the ones that are making us Canadians look like fools. What's next, infliction of emotional distress due to excessive bumps on taxiways? I say give them $100 for a new cat, and name it "Fu...*king mentally unstable people trying to rip an airline off".  Laugh out loud

Hmmm...... Looks like the cat Fu da coup!  Laugh out loud

At fifteen, the poor cat probably didn't survive the trauma of being stuck in the cargo hold on such a long flight, anyway. However, that doesn't explain the damaged cage.
Seems like an X-File to me. I suppose the folks at Air Canada will be contacting Maulder and Scully to investigate this one.

I think it was the influence of being in America at the time they arrived, they probably contacted an American lawyer whilst on the ground and that would be what he would suggest they should do  Big grin  Big grin.

Is that $5 million in USD or CAD? And are they subject to paying the GST on it?  Smile

ACG, I agree. Once, our family flew our Cocker Spaniel from YVR-YYZ. That poor animal was indeed upset and stressed at the journey. We never did that to him again. I remember flying AC YYZ-YVR in 1999. I was at the back of the A340, and before engine start and push-back, I and fellow pax could hear
a poor dog whining and crying from below deck. It was most upsetting to hear.

P.S: Even though it was a cat, it was still a beloved pet to that family, and
for that, I'm sorry to hear of its gone missing. But $5 million?? LOL.

Right, Clickhappy. Now if it were an Asian airline, I'd REALLY be concerned about what was on the menu.

I've seen roasted cats sold in rotisserie ovens in
southern China during a trip several years ago.
(can't remember the name, but it's the province
a few hundred miles west of Hong Kong, can someone
tell me what province that is?)

The cats are cooked just like Boston Market's rotisserie
chickens. I was somewhat sickened by the sight,
but I have to admit it did smell rather nice.(probably
tasted like chicken, too!)  Sad I own several large cats
and I've never looked at them the same way after that trip.

Anyway, I just realized that this couple is asking for
USD $5,000,000. Do they know that airlines don't even
pay that much when a human dies in a crash?  Angry  Angry  Angry

Yes, give them compensation. Not $5 mil. If it were up
to me, I'd say somewhere around $30000. I spend roughly
$2000 a year on each one of my cats.(cat food, litter, vet
visits, white mice, etc....) Their cat was 15 years old,
so 15 x $2000 and the total is $30000. Of course, don't
forget the initial cost of the cat, which was $250....

Bobcat;
If anything, I think they should base it on the life expectancy of the cat. If the cat had... say... about two years left to go, then, pay the determined equivelent (in your case, $4Gs) as compensation.

AW,

Sounds good to me... When one of my oldest cats died
a year ago, she was 23 1/2 years old...  Sad The ages
of the cats currently in my home are: 3, 14, 17, 17.5, 19
years....
