b>I know the new runway is supposed to be finished soon, but I have not heard anything lately about extending the parallel one in place from 8,999ft. to 11,000+.
Phase I involves building the new parallel (in progress.) Phase II involves extending the current 8,999 ft. runway to 10,000 ft. (NOT 11,500 ft.) Phase III, which has not yet received federal approval, involves construction of a third parallel. (If you're wondering, our current 6C/24C will be decommissioned.)
-back of Concourse D, what's the deal?
This was designed to be converted to jetway space once the turboprops were gone. Right now the RJs still taxi in and discharge pax to the ramp. They could still do the conversion, but the airport has other priorities right now.
-are they moving the international gate and adding more?
We currently have three customs gates: two at the end of Concourse A (A12, A13) and one at the root of Concourse B (B1). A12 and A13 double as charter and g/a customs gates, and B1 is dedicated for Air Canada Jazz (though United Airlines occasionally brings in one of its regionals there.) Not much use for more international gates right now, as our only transatlantic is still CO 66/67 (CLE-LGW, LGW-CLE) and our other international flights are with ERJs (COEx) and a little DH-8 (Jazz)!
-IX Center, when are they going to knock the f....... thing down?
Well, everyone above said 2016, for some reason I thought it was 2012. I guess it's a fifteen year agreement. In any case, the City of Brook Park still gets revenue from the building for a set period, and the City of Cleveland cannot tear down the building until that agreement expires. At this rate, they won't need to, since the current runway construction is so far behind...
-If that goes are they going to build a third parallel runway like they planned along the back side of Concourse D?
Yes. It will go through the IX Center site. The cargo ramps will be moved south of it. I envision the runway located south of the new Consolidated Deicing Facility (located at the bend of Postal Road) and extending southeast (parallel to the existing runways) through the area where a whole slew of houses will be torn down.
Remember guys, the airport is going to expand southward to Sheldon Road. There will be plenty of room for a new 7,000 ft. runway if it starts at the border of Rocky River Reservation.
-any plans for terminal expansion(there was a plan for a mid-field terminal)?
Currently there just isn't any room for terminal expansion. There will never be room for a midfield terminal, as the parallel runways are still going to be very close together (parallel ILS approaches will still be impossible.) The existing terminal has undergone renovation in recent years. Currently the terminal roadway is under renovation. And the existing terminal is roughly 1/3 south from the northeast end of the runways, 2/3 north of the southwest end. That's probably as close to midfield as you can get.
-rumors and/or facts on future airline service?
I haven't heard any. All I know is we scared away Spirit Airlines a few years ago... I want them back!
-will CO and CO Express bring back routes once the runway is down(mainly the ones CO Express dropped like SBN, TOL, AZO, CAK, ect...)?
The CAK route is probably gone for good. CO realized that quite a few people were using CAK departures to save money on tickets even though they were just as close to CLE.
IMHO, I think CO should resume CAK-CLE service, but with an express bus like they run ABE-EWR. That way, the people who really need to leave from CAK can do it, and those who were using the system can choose between the hassle of riding a bus and going straight to CLE instead.
I don't know about the rest of them.
-CO rumors and/or facts on future nonstop service?
In the cuts CO announced recently, CLE was supposed to be the least affected.
-any BKL rumors or plans?
As you read above, quite a few people think BKL should just crash and burn. I agree with the others that we should keep it and encourage CO to move some COEx service downtown, catering to business folk. I have envisioned service from BKL to these various cities, for business and government: CMH, DET, MDW, LGA, DCA, MDT, IND, LEX.
Up, up and away!
