UK Airline Rumours, News And Questions!

Fri Aug 30, 2002 6:23 am

I've got a few questions that I'd be very grateful for a answer to:

  • According to Jethro's UK and Ireland Fleet Listings, Eastern Airways (based at Norwich, Norfolk) is due to receive their first ERJ-145, registered G-EMBA. Does anyone know if the a/c is with Eastern yet, what routes it will operate on and where it's comming from?
Also, is Eastern still leasing City Airline's ERJ-135 SE-RAA and is there any news on the possibility of Eastern aquiring the 5 ex-British Regional Jetstream-41s they have on option?

  • New Isle of Man based Euromanx have leased a Beech-1900D from Dutch carrierTrans Travel Airlines/TTA. The a/c is apparently being used on twice daily scheduled flights from IOM to Dublin and Edinburgh. Does anyone know how long the lease is for, if more a/c and routes are planned and if PH-RAR has been painted in the new airline's livery? Their website is http://www.euromanx.com

  • Has Air Wales/Awyr Cymru received the 1st of their 3 ATR-42s which was due this month? Also, what are the airline's routes plans now that WW have a base in Cardiff, and whose are the 2 German Beech-1900Cs they are currently leasing for a short period?

  • Now that Flybe have been visited by both Embraer (with the 170) and Bombardier (with the CRJ900), is a decision any nearer?

  • Isle of Scilly Skybus were rumoured last year to be interested in adding larger a/c to their fleet of Trislanders and Twin Otters. Has there been any more news on this?

  • Wolverhampton based Air Murcia is planning to start 3 x daily service between Wolverhampton Business Park and London City Airport. The a/c is apparently going to be a DO228. The services are apparently going to start this year, but does anyone know what month?

  • Feel free to add your own questions if you want!

    Thanks a lot  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

    Ooops- slight correction!

I've just realised that Eastern's main base is Humberside Airport (serving the city of Hull).
I'm quite supprised that T3 hasn't started a Humberside to London service considering the nearest airport to Hull with a London service is Leeds-Bradford which is at least a 2 hour drive away. Does anyone know if they're planning such a route with their rapid expansion?

The economics for small airlines such as Eastern don't work for LHR or LGW so the only realistic option for them would be LCY. Even then slots are still difficult to come by at peak times and the northbound market is limited. In short, it ain't gonna happen.

PS - outside of rush hour, it shouldn't be taking you 2 hours to get from Hull to LBA!

I'm still waiting for confirmation on the 3 proposed Eastern Airways routes to MAN that are expecting to be codeshared with bmi (and I wonder if the NWI one will also become codeshared).

If I remember correctly British European had a rather unsuccessful spell trying to get people on a LBA-LCY service using DHC8s and British Regional an even more unsuccessful spell on the SZD-LCY route using J41s. I can't quite imagine anyone risking HUY-LCY; any link to London has to be to LGW so that passangers may have a range of services to connect onto (I doubt if LHR access will happen for new domestic airlines* unless the moon is proved to be made out of cheese)

    * Does Eastern Airways still have the right to fly into LHR? I've got an old book (circa 1980) which makes reference to Eastern starting a HUY-NWI-LHR route using a DC3.

Englandair, G-EMBA changed hands three days ago (27/08/2002). The new owner is:

I don't know if Eastern are going to lease the aircraft from Port One, but these are agents for Brazilian Export Development Bank. This information I found in an interesting article at Jane's http://www.janes.com/business/news/jtf/jtf001214_n_1.shtml

EuroManx say they plan to extend both its capacity and schedule, they are currently investigating further routes.A route EuroManx says is on the list,is Jersey who lost their Manx link to the IOM earlier this year.

Air Wales is now also operating on the Cork-Plymouth route, which started on August 19th.The flights are operated from Sunday to Friday.

IOS Skybus were operating flights from St.Marys to Guernsey twice weekly (one via Newquay)in July with Twin Otters.I heard rumours that they could start again though i'm not sure.

As usual nothing's happening at Manston. The firm that own and run it (Wiggins) is trying to sell a stake in the airport. However, since brokers reports suggest that they may become technically insolvent if they fail to raise the money, it seems unlikely that anyone would be daft enough to put money into it. Mama Airlines are still promising to start flights next Spring but there's still no indication that they've raised enough money to do it in reality.

David - where BE fell over with LBA-LCY was the over ambitious scheduling. They filled their morning and evening flights comfortably, but insisted on operating a 4 x daily frequency which meant the middle of the day flights were flying up and down with single figure loads. I am still bemused as to why they didn't look to use the a/c to fly to a leisure route in the middle of a 2 daily sorties to LCY (a tactic adopted by bmi with Cork & Jersey and by BA with their IOM service).

In the same context of course, VLM are being particularly ambitious with 5 x daily from MAN.

SZD was simply too far south and the time savings for travel into London did not justify the £250+ fares being charged as a result.

HUY-London is the subject of much debate. It has previously been flown to LHR, LGW and STN. The LHR route by AirUK was popular, but could not justify a larger a/c, or the landing fees. LCY has'nt been tried, although City Airbus were due to try the route in the early 90s. I think Eastern COULD make a good route, one morning rotation and one evening rotation, similar timings to their new HUY-EDI route. Does anyone know how that is donig by the way?

flyBE is no nearer to a decision on fleet renewal. Rest assured, they will NOT opt for the CRJ 700/900. The Embrarer is an option, but to avoid the neccessity of adding a whole new type to the AOC, the Avro ARJ is the likely option. Also, in regard to the BE LBA-LCY service, the morning and evening services did OK, not great, i have talked to many of the crew who were around LBA at the time, and they all say the same thing, there was a lack of advertising for the route.

VLMs MAN-LCY route should do OK, as VLM had excellent branding at LCY, where it has been the main operator for some time now. KLMuk operated the route 4xdaily, and cut this to 3, so a 5xdaily schedule should be a challenge for VLM, but i'm sure they will pull it off  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Thanks a lot everyone for your responses!

I wasn't thinking of LHR or LGW, more along the lines of LCY (as you said) or STN. It just seems very strange to me that HUY has direct flights to Aberdeen and Edinburgh, yet flights to our massive capital city apparently won't work!  Confused
Anyone know how the loads are on the HUY-EDI & ABZ routes are?

I doubt Eastern would compete with BD if the flights are to be codeshared with bmi, so what do you think the routes would be?
Also forgive my ignorance, but what airport is SZD?

Thanks a lot for that info. Do you have any idea what country the a/c is currently in? Does Port One lease out a/c?

Thanks for the info- nice to see that IOSS seems to be doing OK, although I looked at their prices from Exeter to St. Mary's and they seem extremely expensive!

A few weeks ago the following appear on the Mama Air website, under their news section:
"With the recent White Paper being launched from the Department of Transport, Mama is now ever more positive of its future in the south east. The document confirmed the need for more airlines and expansion, alongside quality at a low price and here at Mama we shall endeavour to achieve this. (July 31, 2002)."
They also vowed to keep their operations at Manston (assuming they start) as opposed to switching them to other southeast airports:
"But what about the future of Mama at Manston with Cliffe being a 4 runway airport close by? Well what ever the future of the southeast's aviation and the airline our heart will always be in Kent. Naturally London Cliffe will be a very attractive option for the airline but rest assured Mama will keep its headquarters in Kent." (I thought Manston was in Kent anyway- hense it's other name, Kent International!)

I haven't heard the Carlisle rumours! Could you tell me a bit more please?

On the subject of VLM, I think they seriously need to sort out their online booking. My family considered flying them LCY-ANR this October but were extremely put off by the fact that you have to enter your credit card details before you can even check availability!!!

And lastly, has Scot Airways disposed of the two DO-328s that were apparently being sent back to Dornier?
Despite the a/c has been around for a while so I’d expect a verdict by now, does CB still have 10 of the jet versions on conditional order*?
(on the condition that the a/c can be operated in and out of LCY)

ps. did anyone see "Britain's Sexiest Air Crew" on ITV the other night? Scot Airways has their cabin crew and their seats covered in the same red tartan, and it looks dreadful!  Nuts
