Did Pan Am Fly MIA-GIG In The 80s With A 747?

Fri Aug 30, 2002 8:42 pm

I remember when I was less then 10, my family and I would fly ATL-MIA-GIG-GRU every year since there was no direct ATL-GRU service back then. When I was around 5-7 (1986-88), I distinctly remember waiting at the gate at MIA and looking at a Pan Am 747 that we were going to board for GIG. I asked my mom if she remembered flying Pam Am to GIG, and she said we never flew on Pan Am. I can remember for a fact that we flew on a 747, because I remember looking at the staircase when we were boarding and asking my mom if we could go upstairs. I'm not completely sure about it being Pan Am, but I could have sworn that we did.

My question is: did Pan Am fly MIA-GIG with a 747? If they didn't, what airline had 747 service for MIA-GIG in the 80s?

Yes Pan Am flew MIA-GRU with both the 747 and the A310. We flew the ATL-MIA leg in the afternoons and evenings with 737's. The flight from ATL-MIA was 556 and the flight from MIA-GIG was 441.

Flight 441 flew HNL-LAX-MIA-GIG-GRU
Flight 556 flew JFK-ATL-MIA

Hope that helps

I remember, back in july 1986,a long delay in GIG (4 hs),waiting for our plane coming from MIA.The flight was MIA-GIG-EZE in a 747(Clipper Ocean Spray).
I saw almost 3 747 in GIG that day.I just remember Clipper Mandarin and Ocean Spray.
