My Favorite Spot At FRA, Now Also In The Database

Tue Sep 03, 2002 12:20 am

Many forum members ask quite often for the location of the famous "runway 18 spot" at FRA, now I found a photo in the a.net database were it is very good visible. Here is the picture, taken by Fly-K:

It is my favorite spot, especially in the evening when a lot of widebodies pass the platform during their take off roll.

I think most of the heavy ones use either 07 or 25 for their takeoffs.
In my opinion there is only a very few airlines that always use rwy 18 for takeoffs for example South African, Lan Chile etc.

All other widebodies seem to prefer either 07 or 25 during the rush in the evening...Air China, Korean Air, Asiana, Singapore Airlines and so on.
Don't you agree with me?

I agree with you that the spot is great but it would have been even better if all heavys departed on that rwy. You certainly miss a lot when all those big ones depart on the other runways there.

As I mentioned in my topic above, the best time for spotting at rwy 18 is in the evening because you can see a lot of widebodies departing there at this time. But you are correct, I would like to see more of them at the 18 during daytime.

I understood that you meant the evening already in your first post.
I have spent several days on that platform there at rwy 18 and unfortunately during the evening it always feels like you miss the widebodies that you really want because they choose to depart on rwy 07/25. The ones that choose rwy 18 are always the same like SAA and Lan Chile etc.

During the daytime then, in my opinion there is quite many widebodies that depart on rwy 18 on the day especially around midday when a lot of the US airlines, Arabic and Asian airlines depart. Unfortunately photography is not possible at that time if it isn't cloudy  Sad

This is just my thoughts though  Big grin

During daytime I like it to stay on the observation deck because it is very busy around, from there you can also see the two other runways where in my opinion most of the US carriers take off. There is also a nice spot in front of 07/25, the planes fly approximately 20 meters above you and it is very loud but I can recommend it.
