US To Punta Cana, Costa Rica (from CLT)

Thu Sep 05, 2002 5:19 am

USAirways will launch service to two new Latin Americand destinations, pending government approval.

USAirways plans to launch four times weekly service between Charlotte and Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, a fast growing market. The service would start 14 December is approved. Among US carriers, USAirways will join American Airlines, American Eagle, and Pan Am. American Airlines flies to Punta Cana two times a week from JFK, a service which will expand to daily on 15 December 2002. In addition, American Airlines will launch Miami-Punta Cana service on 1 November. American Eagle offers two daily service between San Juan and Punta Cana. Pan Am offers service from Punta Cana to Newark, with plans to add Sanford and Miami in the future. In addition, LanPeru offers weekly service on the Miami-Punta Cana route.

USAirways plans to launch daily service between Charlotte and San Jose, Costa Rica in February 2003, pending government approval. Among US carriers, USAirways will join American Airlines, Continental, Delta, and United Airlines. American Airlines offers four daily flights from Miami and daily service to Dallas. Continental offers daily service to both Houston and Newark, while Delta offers daily service to Atlanta and United offers daily service to both Guatemala City (continuing to Los Angeles) and Mexico City (continuing to Chicago O'Hare). In addition, Northwest offers Saturday winter service between Liberia, Costa Rica and Minneapolis. A little off-topic, but look for Liberia, CR to become a hot market. Word is Delta (to ATL) is looking into it, and so is American (to MIA).

Both of these destinations should be good leisure destinations for US Airways, they should try Punta Cana'-Philadelphia Im sure the flight would work.
I find it funny that Northwest took the lead on adding Liberia before AA, when Northwest which is basically unknown in Latin America and AA is the dominant U.S. carrier in Latin America
