As I am reading that USAirways is expanding to Punta Cana and San Jose, CR. I cant help but question these moves, considering the holes that USAirways has in their domestic system. USAirways first needs a few more western destinations on the map before they keep expanding in the Caribbean and Latin America. The places that need to be considered for service are; PDX, SJC, SAT, AUS, OKC, and SLC. At least PDX, SJC, and SLC must be considered for service. Also serving Mexico's largest city (D.F.) wouldnt be quite a terrible idea either. I'm pretty sure that these routes could garner significant traffic especially from frequent flyers in the northeast. I'm not saying start with 5 daily flights to PDX from PIT, but maybe 12 weekly flights on an A319 might do pretty well. Local traffic would be pretty low for sure, but connecting traffic could easily make up for this. I'm also waiting for the day when US decides to serve Hawaii. How could they not have at least one daily to HNL? If I was your average Chairmans Preffered member I might be semi-irked at that. I know that they have an alliance with NW (correct?) to do Pacific service, but HNL is a must for FF members and leisure travelers alike. I'm sure that in the winter a flight from PIT-HNL would be packed with not only people using awards, but executives from the northeast paying good money to go to Hawaii. I just have a hunch that a PHL-HNL flight might be more in demand than a flight from PHL-Punta Cana (I forgot the code).
America's chickens are coming home to rooooost!
