The World's Most Illogical Airline

Fri Sep 06, 2002 12:13 am

I simply don't understand it. It does make sense.
I was looking to book a return to Belfast from Manchester with BA, leaving on a Friday evening and returning on the 7am flight the following Monday. With their new system it said that the outward would cost £59, and the return £39, pluus taxes and charges resulting in a total of £124.70. Not too bad at all, I thought, but i decided to book that return to MAN and look for a cheaper flight from anywhere in the north of Enlgand. Anyways...I put the BHD-MAN flight through for a one-way fare, and I noticed first of all that it was BA's old style website, i.e. not the one that gives a choice of days showing the cheapest flight for that day. Onwards and...they gave me a final oneway fare for BA7782 of £131.00!!! Incredible! Its £7 cheaper to take two flights instead of one, even tjough I would have been booking the same seat!

Sorry for rattling on a bit there but I am slightly shocked. Anyone else had this?

Well, things like that happen:

Especially if you check IATA full fares which are loaded and published in the system.
Another example would be:
KUL-SIN-CGK (Kuala Lumpur to Jakarta via Singapore) is cheaper than SIN-CGK only. This is a full fare you you can fly all IATA Airlines which have fares loaded on the flight. Ie. JAL, MAS or SriLankan from KUL to SIN and from SIN to JKT you take Kuwait Airways, Garuda, SQ or what ever.

In your case the reason could be because people normally are going for a direct or non-stop flight rather than change anywhere else or combine two tickets.

Aviation is fun. Always compare prices  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

One way fares are only sold as full fare tickets with most airlines. The class designator is Y. Often times roundtrips are cheaper because of restrictions etc. This is how the airlines make money........they thrive on people who travel at the last minute and buy one way tickets.......they certainly making tons of money on the traveller who is paying $250.00 for a return from JFK to LAX.

It does not happen only in airlines.
When I lived in the UK, I had a few occasions to cross the Channel with a car.
That is usually pretty expensive : about 120 pounds for a one way ticket, while a round trip could easily be found at 70 pounds, or even 25 pounds (very restrictive, but interesting none the less).

On one occasion, prices where so twisted, that for a return trip, it was even cheaper to buy 2 return trips and use one leg of each...

However, they did not like us to do that  Wink/being sarcastic
