Hey Captain!

Know there is war in the Gulf it is a time for a question.
If you were captaining a 747 for Quantas and had just taken of from Iran and fly over Iraq at FL 250 and you heard over the radio bombs were being dropped. I am sure all of you would go the quickest way out but would you fly high and avoid the ground fire and maybe hit a a sam. Or fly 200 of the ground so no sams hit you and you hope thatall ground fire see you a a commercail airline and not shoot.

I would ground hug as I think it is safer because when you are 25,000 feet hight they proably can not tell the diiference between a 747 and a B-52.

I think the airlines are being vectored around
that area. If I were flying in the middle east I
would be a bit nervous at this time. But it sounds
like Iraq's arms are as dull as my butter knife!

This is an interesting question, because the US can't announce ahead of time when theye going to bomb--that would sort of defeat the point. I wonder if they hae any super-secret diplomatic channels where they say "hey, guys, you might not want to file any flight plans over Iraq next Thursday."

Sorry, a QANTAS Captain would never have to ask this question. QANTAS does not fly to Iran!

Please dont take offence as none was meant. I guessed as much that your question was to just set up a scenario but just in the interest of accuracy I thought I would point out that QANTAS no longer flies to anywhere in the Middle East except for a codeshare agreement with Emirates to DXB. :-)

I'm sure the Shah would enjoy the new First Class sleeper seats in the 744!

Commercial airliners have been shot at before.
I remember the US navy taking out that Iranian airliner
not long ago with a surface to air missle.
Id pour on the fires and hightail it out of that airspace. lol
They say the best maneuver to to do a sharp roll
to throw the tracking of the missle off.

That possible scenario would not take place because the U.S. Navy would vector the commercial aircraft out ot the area before the bombing started. You are not allowed to fly over Iraqi airspace anyway. There is a no fly zone over much of the country. Last night you would have been met by F-14 Tomcats telling you to choose another route to England or whereever.

I think this topic is strange in a way......Anyone in the world could be reading our answers!! Not that we are high ranking governmental officials(at least I'm not), but it's something to think about.....

Those F14's would have been so close you could read their call signs off of their helmets.

There was that airliner in Congo (B727?) that was shot down by terriosts just after takeoff not to long ago.

If the situation in this topic did happen, I would dump all of the fuel that I didn't need to get to the nearest friendly large airport so that I could fly high and fast.

I would Decend to 15,000ft. with full thrust on all the engines, and declare an emergency into the nearset safe airport so that we could get the heck outta dodge. Also I would turn on all the lights I could find to identify myself as a Commercial Airline and pray that they don't notice i am British or American.
