The 727 was designed to both go into short fields and soft fields. In fact, Alaska used them to go into soft fields in Alaska.

We have had our share of 727s come into Purdue Airport and our main runway (10/28) isn't that much bigger. I have no doubt that they are capable of flying into BMI's airport.

We get chartered 727's flying into here in State College routinely for football or NBA charters. The runway here is 6700', and its more than ample for the 727's. Last Friday, Central Florida flew in here for their game against Penn State, they came in on a Planet Airways 727-200. He flew an interesting approach, he buzzed the campus and valley at about 1000 AGL, just below the tops of the ridges. I was working when he came in, man he slammed on the reverse thrust and brakes. He stopped in about 3,500, faster than most of the props coming in here.

NW flies their 727's in here when we have preseason NBA camps and games. TWA used to fly DC-9's in here as charters too. Planet Airway's 727's is what Penn State uses for their away games.
