NW Y Class Service - Longhaul

Sun Sep 08, 2002 12:41 pm

I am flying on NW in October from DFW to DTW, and then on to either FRA or AMS. If it's FRA, I'm on a DC-10, and if it's AMS I'm on a 747-400. Anybody have any good/bad things to say about NW's longhaul Y Class? This is my first time flying with them, and I'm a bit apprehensive. Anything you have to contribute, good or bad, would be much appreciated. Many thanks!
Happy Flying!

Overall I think NW is an ok airline but their service is not consistent. I've had both really good service or really bad service. Longhaul Y class is nothing special. There are no PTVs, just the bulkhead screen. The seats are actually comfortable even without headrests. As far as ground service, I think that it is better at their non hub cities. All of my bad experiences have happened at MSP or DTW. I think you should fly into FRA being a DC-10. I think you should fly it as they will not be around as long as the 744s. Fly one while you can, It could be your last chance.

Have a good trip. Make sure to take lots of pics and write a trip report when you get back.

Thanks for the input, Kris! I will keep that in mind when I book. Although I would like to fly the DC-10, my guess is that I will fly into AMS unless the fares change drastically. I have flown on a few DC-10's in my time though, and I'm not too worried about it. Thanks again!

A couple of years ago I flew NW LAX to NRT on a couple of rattling 742's. The service was nothing spectacular, but the seats were relatively comfortable and the whole shebang was very, very inexpensive. NW has some great international deals.

I believe that NW codeshares a lot of their US-AMS services with KLM, so you might be able to get a seat with them. I understand that KLM's economy product is pretty good. O'course, the BEST service is with Singapore from ORD to AMS (if they're still offering it... they stopped for some time).

Have fun. ; )
This is the time. And this is the record of the time.

i flew NW this summer SFO-MSP-AMS-BOM ...one way was in Y class...the other way was in J class. Both products were patheic in my opinion. The service in both classes were horrible, the FA's almost seemed like they were there because they had to be. The food was ok (really wasnt anything great even in J) and the overall service was sad. After that trip, i really wouldnt fly NW unless it was absolutely the last way to go.... Smile

Hope u get on 747. NW DC-10's are horrible! I did Msp-Ams 3x on that old peace of s... and everytime was very uncomfortable. Service is very unconsistent. May be terrible! In my ratings least comfortable major airline in US. Have a nice trip.

When I flew NWA AMS-MSP in March 2001 (B742) i was quite impressed.
The legroom was quite good, and the seats soft and comfy. The food was, in my eyes, combined in very creative ways, and both big and tasty. You could get drinks all the time, and I had actually not much to complain about other than the female FA's being quite anonymous and not very cheerfull.

Overall i found the NWA flight better than the KL flight (JFK-AMS) except for the crew.

A friend of mine flew NWA from JFK-NRT-ICN last year. Prior to taking the flight, she was worried about the service. I asked her about it afterwards and she said it was pretty good. She was most impressed with the food. NWA has a good product to Asia. Their domestic product leaves much to be desired though. I can't comment on their flights to Europe.

In one word - crap.
The DC-10s are great planes, but NW's Y Class configs are cramped, dirty, tattered and the inflight service is positively disgraceful unless you happen to come across that rare (for NW) flight attendant who defies NW's shabby standards.

On my NW international trips I have found good to great service from the flight attendants, especially latley it seems like they are trying hard to keep people coming back to NW.

The food has been ok to very good.

The DC10-30 is comfortable enough if you sit on the "2 seat side" near the front, and I recommend on the 747-400/200 sitting near the front or near the back where the planes tapers in the "2 seat side"

Overall NW offers a competitive product and I have been far more impressed with their service compared to UA economy minus on similar sectors.
