Evergreen International

Sun Sep 08, 2002 9:00 pm

Evergreen is the right namefor this airline which uses veeeeeery old airplanes.

Is it a cargo airline? What does it transport?

Does it fly worldwide or only in the States?

It is pretty much a helicopter and heavy freight charter company based out of Mcminnville Oregon. The also run a greenhouse operation down there and do heavy aircraft maintaince and storage in Marana Arizona.

Evergreen has the only mail contract that is flown with Helicopters that I am aware of, that is up in Nome. They had bid and where awarded an essential air service contract to provide combi jet service to the Aleutian Islands but where not able to locate a suitable combi aircraft for the service to the contract got yanked.

Hi!

I also recall seeing Evergreen International charter flights to LIS in early 80's. They used to fly with DC-8-50's, 61's and 63's. NIce livery and nice memories from that time.

they used to fly equipment around the world for the CIA, in fact Pinal Air Park in Arizona, a huge airplane graveyard, is an ex-CIA base.

As Clickhappy said, Evergreen is a fake, all their equipment is used by the CIA.

They used to keep one up here in Alaska working on the slope but I think they got out of that buisness.

Evergreen was very instrumental in getting UPS off the ground (sorry for the pun  Smile Evergreen continues to do some charter work for UPS. They fly to different destinations around the globe but are based in the U.S.

Evergreen also owns at least some portion of EVA Airlines based out of Taipei.
But yes, they are an enormous freight company, both aviation and otherwise.

A )Evergreen is not a CIA airline.
B) Evergreen does not own a part of EVA Air.

But it is true that MZJ was a CIA base between WWII and the early 1970s. It is also true that Evergreen operated most UPS flights until 1983 and that they fly very old airplanes.

Evergreen Aviation (USA) has no relation to the Evergreen Group/EVA Air (Taiwan). Evergreen (Taiwan) is an enourmous cargo and logistics company that owns part (or all, I'm not sure) of EVA.

My bad! I thought that they were all part of the same Evergreen, especially since EVA seemed to always have such a high proportion of western pilots.

The EVA Group from Taiwan originally wanted to name their airline Evergreen like their trucking and ship companies but the Evergreen Airlines name was already taken from the Evergreen based in the US. The companies from Taiwan and the US have no relation to each other except that in some places the ground handling for EVA Air is done by Evergreen Services from the US which is a company owned by the Evergreen company in Oregon.

Evergreen International is kind of like a big dysfunctional family, it's got MX, ground handling, charters, helicopters, an agricultural division, heavy maintenance and a rather large aircraft called the Spruce Goose...(its in the museum in McMinnville OR about 45min south of PDX)

Their 747 fleet is either leased out on deicated routes or on one-off charters (they ran a goat-roped relief charter into Kabul last winter) and a LOT of military charter work. And they have some of the oldest 747s in the world (really too cheap to buy a newer set...). Then there are the misc. mail contracts, DHL contracts, small package stuff with their fleet of DC-9s.

As for CIA connections, like any CIA front company there are no overt ties, although there is a lot of specualtion and rumors about their involvement with CIA front companies dating back to Air America.(I found some stuff awhile ago, but can;t find it now that implicated EZ ties to several CIA front operations) Their government ties are very strong, a good example is their work since 9/11 (rumor has it they dropped a lease (I think it was Qantas) operation to start taking military work).

And yes, no realtions to Evergreen (the shipping company) or EVA (although they do ground handling for EVA in a couple of places).

Just my 2 bits...

I have a couple of books that talk about the CIA/EZ relationship. Is it not true?

Evergreen along with TWA, Pan Am, Continental, Southern Air Transport and on, did (do) indeed operate flights for the CIA. They also operate(d) for tour groups, the USAF and anyone that could pay the fee. This does not make any of them a "CIA" airline.

The same plane (N945F) flys Seattle - Ketchikan - Sitka - Juneau - Seattle every day, brings all of the UPS, and USPS mail to Southeast Alaska.
