CI Might Goes 12 A333 And 6-8 744(LOI)

Mon Sep 09, 2002 5:00 am

Another dramatic U-turn for China airlines order.

Due to the current Taiwan's difficulties for official political relationship, China Airlines is Likely to order 12 A330-300, and sign the Letter of Intent (LOI) with Boeing for 6 to 8 B747-400.

Internal source from China Airlines days ago says that CI has officially readjusted it's order and has decided to "go ahead" with the order.

The new adjustment will see CI playing the "number game". China Airlines will order small number of Airbus instead of a large number, CI will switch some of the costs for Airbus order to Boeing's Long-haul, high capacity jet. If CI gives green light for this, the total order cost will cost additional billions of US Dollars.

Despite, US used it's political pressure to introduce 777 to CI, CI is not willing to buy 777. With the alternative of 744LOI, this will meet China Airlines' goal of reducing fleet type to 3 (738, 744, 330/340), and not letting Boeing dissapointed.

China Airlines was suppose to order 16 A330-300 in July, for replacing 12 A300 from 2004. Due to the political pressure from EU and US, it was postponed.

CI's CEO says that the postpone of the aircraft order is due to the market condition, including possible scheduled link between Taiwan and Russia, Korea, China. Plus current European route may see some changes in the future, as a result, CI will not rule out any possibilities for "re-adjusting" it's order.

Another related report saying that Boeing received a notice from CI for 15 B777-200ER plus 6 744ER (or QXLR).

However, EU recently agreed several bills to support Taiwan politically, which causes Taiwan deciding to "turn back" to Airbus.

The version of the 744 that CI prepares to sign LOI is not clear in Chinese, because "...另加至少六架波音747-400長程高運量客機。" It's either ER or QXLR.

The more I think about it the more I think CI is better off with the A330-300.

The reason is simple: the A333 has enough range to fly from TPE to most destinations in eastern Asia (NRT, KIX, ICN, HKG, MNL, SIN). And the support Airbus already has in place for the A300B4-600 fleet can be used to support the A333.

Don't forget they have the A343 in service so the pilots can fly both A333 & A343's,another cost saving.

I have noticed that CI have 3 738's avaliable for sale, anybody know the reason behind this?

Thanks and Rgds

Those 738 could goes to Mandarin Airlines, their subsidiary, as F100 is expected to leave Mandarin's fleet soon.

Hkgspotter1, you echo my sentiments but unfortunately, a huge portion of CI is government owned so you will see a lot of arm twisting before the final decision is made.

Taiwan government is in the process of privatizing CI, so in the future there will be less political pressure on CI to purchase aircraft. With CI's dismal safety record optiaining ETOP might be difficult. CI also likes its long haul fleet with 4 engines because that what the customers want.

Four engines is what people want?!

What a load of rubbish! China Airlines is weighing up between A330s and B777s. Both of which are TWIN-engine aircraft. Four engines have nothing to do with this order.

Hkgspotter1: What do you mean "look at VS"? Virgin received their A340s during the severe economic downturn (ie. recession) during the early 1990s, at a hugely discounted rate. Subsequently, instead of changing fleet types altogether (to the 777), they may as well stick with the Airbus. It has nothing to do with 4 versus twin engine planes.

"4 engines, 4 long haul" written on VS's engines. and Branson stated he prefered 4 engines aircraft, it's rather well known, and it's in his biography 'Losing My Virginity'

If you're talking about "many people" as those associated with aircraft purchase decision-making, then one can see that in terms of decisions which pit twins against quads, just the opposite is true. Since this competition is pretty much limited to the 340 series vs. the 777 series, a quick look at the order/delivery book reveals that the 340 lags behind the 777 by nearly 500 copies.

So the comment should be re-written to say "two engines is what people really want...except for a few people that prefer quads like VS".
