Unmarked, But Operating 737s In Las?

Tue Sep 10, 2002 5:29 am

When I was in LAS in June, I saw several 737-200s that were unmarked, but had a red stripe running down the fuselage (similar to Western's stripe, but with no "W"). They were active & parked at the terminal where the private jets & Scenic Airlines were. I heard the radio callsign, and it sounded like "JanEt" or something. They flew pretty regularly. When we drove up to the parking lot & asked the security guard about it, he said it was a charter company. Is this true?

Does anybody know what I'm talking about & who these 737s are operated by?

Are these the Area 51 planes for the government?

Could it be those mysterious flights to Area 51 in the desert?
Saw something about that on Discovery once.

They go by the callsign "Janet" and used to fly numerous trip daily from BUR-PMD and BUR-Groom Lake back when the F-117 and Lockheed were in full swing at BUR airport. I'm not sure who currently operates these flights from LAS or where they fly them to but it is still a pretty secretive operation.

I saw those 737's on a Discovey Channel documentary on area 51 aswell, they are probably used to transport Area 51 employees to Area 51. Very secretive indeed.

Do a search on "Janet". The EG&G birds have been discussed here many times. Most of them are USAF T-43s which have had the navigator training consoles stripped out and replaced with pax seats.

Technically speaking the planes are operated by EG&G Special Projects and are operated under contract to the US Government to shuttle employees from LAS to the Tonopah Test Range / Area 51.

I notice that in that picture, it appears that all of the window shades are closed. Is that a requirment on those area 51 flights?

......And here is more info if you're really interested:

http://www.dreamlandresort.com

Of course, there are pages on the "JANET" flights...
does anybody venture a guess what "JANET" stands for in Military parlance.....? Would it be safe to guess J-A-N might stand for "Joint-Air-Network......" to start...?

read some of the reports, they're really interesting-especially about the "Cammo-Dudes"...

 Big thumbs up

Not that I'm aware of. It could just as easily be to be to keep the aircraft cool. It's not as if Janet's passengers might "see" something, since they all have all sorts of clearances to be on the aircraft and headed to TNX to begin with...

Just my 2 cents...

Before the 737's were acquired, DC-6B's were used for a very long time, DC-4's before...operated on behalf of the old AEC.

in those pictures the sun would have been shinning pretty bright into the cabin, I snapped those at like 7:30 and it was already in the 90s.

These aircraft were operated in the '80's by Key Airlines. They started out flying 402's and suddenly got these 737's. ATA was doing a "scheduled" service from Nellis to Tonopah in the '90's. I don't know if the crew needed any special quals or security--I doubt it, though.

A couple of years ago, a TWA MD80 lost an engine and diverted to "the airport that doesn't exist". The hangers were all closed and the pax were disembarked and taken to an empty hanger where they were fed and "briefed" by an Air Force officer. The briefing basically was 'you know where you are and what this is, please don't take any pictures or your cameras will be confiscated'. As I remember, they were bussed back to SFO and the plane was fixed and flown out(although I never heard any of the details of the repairs or ferry flight).TC

Ok, thanks for the responses. That's what my dad thought they were for (Area 51), but I wasn't sure. Are the planes ex-Western? That's what it looks like. Pretty interesting history about them! I'd never heard of the TW MD-80's problem & having to land there.

Tom in NO- That's one of the planes! There were about 7 of them while I was there.

Yep for sure JANET aircraft. I just got back from Vegas 20 days ago and luckily I am going back in 17  Smile !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I didnt get a chance to really "tour" the airport but I had a pretty good view from my room in the Luxor maybe I will stay at Mandalay Bay sometime so they will fly RIGHT past my window.. This time though I dont think I will see my air traffic from my room at the Bellagio.  Big grin  Big grin
Speaking of it, anyone else ever been in it? I went in to gamble a few bucks and walked around it is pretty nice, but believe it or not I liked the Luxor better even though the Bellagio is about $500.00 a night and really nice I just really love the inside and outside of the Luxor

I belive that EG&G is the current contractor operating those 737's and T-43's.

Back in the 70's they operated DC-6's (or maybe the were -7s). I was a canyon pilot and watched them come and go nearly every day.

I wonder if, when they're not flying out to Area 51, these are the airplanes that the government uses to spray chemtrails all over the country?  Innocent
